The Handbook of Texas
The Association is very pleased that the Handbook project continues
to draw substantial economic and intellectual support. Southern Metho-
dist University, Southwestern University, and Sul Ross State University
have become the latest cosponsors of the Handbook, joining seventeen
other institutions that are generously contributing to the revision.
Funds from SMU, Southwestern, and Sul Ross will support graduate-
student research assistants who will research and write Handbook ar-
ticles. The Association hopes that other organizations, universities,
foundations, corporations, and individuals will find Handbook posi-
tions, which will enable our finest graduate students and scholars to con-
tribute their special skills to this most important project.
The Development Committee continues its fine work on behalf of
the Handbook. Committee member Jon P. Newton, past chairman of the
Board of Regents of the University of Texas System, assumed the chair-
manship of the Development Committee in March. A. Frank Smith
continues as vice-chairman and former chairman Edward A. Clark has
become honorary chairman. Under the leadership of Ambassador
Clark and Mr. Smith, our Development Committee has brought in and
received in pledges close to $1,ooo,ooo for the Handbook. We are on olur
way toward our $3,ooo,ooo goal, but still need contributions large and
small.
