*The ural population is defined aibitarily by the Inited State Bureau of the Census as that popula-
tion in ing outside incorporated tonns aind cities ot 2.500 or more population. The "farm" rural popula-
tion is that actually living on tarnl, the "non-farm" rural population is that not living on farms, but liv-
ing outside incorporated places of 2.500 polulatin, The umban population Is, of course, that living in towns
and cities of 2,500 population or more
Tlheie have been a number of notable increase in the populations of Texas counties since the cen-
sus of 1930, the most outtalldlng increases probably have taken place in the counties of Gregg. Rusk,
Smith and Montgomery, due to recent discoveries of oil fields. The population of Gregg County, which was
15.778 in 1930, is now estimated at 45,000 to 70,000 the population of Rusk County, which was 32 484 in
1930, is now estimated at 45.000 to 65,000. the population of Smith County, which was 33.123 in 1930, is
now estimated at 60,000 to 80,000 and the population of M\ontgomiry County, which was 14,588 in 1930,
is now estimated at 20,000 to 25.000
$This figure of 204 for urban population is explained by the fact that Dalhart, which has a population
in excess of 2,500 and therefore classed as "unban," is a county line city with 204 of its population dwell-
ing in Hartley County
