special instances, according to the United States Bureau of the Census. All other population is classed as
rural. See note below.
tRural population is divided by the United States Bureau of the Census into that actually living on
farms and that living in rural areas but not on farms, principally in incorporated and unincorporated
towns and villages of less than 2.500 population. Rural population has been divided as follows according
to the last three decennial census enumerations: 1940-rural farm, 2,149,187; rural nonfarm, 1,354,248.
1930--rural farm, 2,342,553; rural nonfarm, 1.092,814. 1920-rural farm, 2,265,734; rural nonfarm.

*Prkr to the census cf 1930, the Mexican population of Texas was included under "native and
foreign-born white " The census of 1930 separated Mexican population and classified it under "other
raes." In the census of 1940 the older classification was used, and the census of 1930 was reclassified
to conform. Both the change to the new classification in 1930 and the return to the old form in 1940 were
at the suggsestion of the Mexican government. The 1930 classification was on the theory that most of the
Maxi an population of Texas is primarily Indian rather than Spanish stock
