Are you a leader? What are you leading people into?
MW
■M
Ask your family and co-workers to help you evaluate your leadership.
That can be frightening, but remember, real leadership takes COURAGE.
Whether we like it or not. change starts at the top. Great leaders don’t
manipulate people with threats and intimidation, they lead by example. If
those we are supposed to lead don’t see integrity in our lives they aren't
going to listen.
Families have a built in expectation that Dad will guide them morally
and spiritually. When we don’t, our families become weak and fractured.
Our wives begin to drift away from us emotionally and/or physically.
Too many times teachers, pastors, employers, politicians and others in
places of authority are looking at all the problems of those they lead
rather than looking at themselves.
Many leaders like to talk about all that they are going to do for those
they lead. The followers watch specifically to see if this will just be
another in a senes of promises that are never kept. When leaders don't
lead it creates anxiety, fear, instability and discouragement in the hearts
of those who knew they are to follow.
A married couple may sense the need for change, but rather than make
significant changes in the way they relate to each other, they simply
change houses and their problems remain. As men we often know we
need to change, but rather than being humble, we change jobs or cars.
And the old habits remain
Real leadership takes courage. Courage to go against the flow. Courage
to stand in the face of criticism; even from those who are very near to us
(i.e., spouses, children, friends). Courage to endure when things look
really bad. Courage to change the status quo. Courage to change myself
and admit to those who follow that I was wrong.
In 1912 Henry Ford had the best selling car in the world; the Model
T. Unfortunately, Ford loved the model T so much that he wouldn't
change a single bolt. Soon, other car companies were making sleeker
models with colors other than black and Ford was rapidly losing his dom-
inance in the automobile industry. As a result he almost put his company
into bankruptcy because of his unwillingness to make changes.
