Of course. I was especially interested in the chapter on faith.
This week s guest writer is the Rev. Mona Bailey, pastor of Corinth
Presbyterian Church and a member of the Wylie Ministerial Alliance.
Life is hard. When we think about how a good God allows the world
to contain tragedy and evil, we are likely to have difficulties. But let’s
admit it. The rabbi has it right If we don’t believe in God. we have more
difficulties. Let this season in which bright lights challenge the winter
darkness, strengthen our faith in a God upon whom we can ultimately
depend.
I know what people wrote to Tom Brokaw because I bought the book.
The Greatest Generation Speaks, to give as a Christmas present. Taking
a break from wrapping gifts 1 sat down to read a little bit of it. You know
how you do with a gift book. You crack the book about three-quarters
open so as to not let any newness escape. I was just going to take a peek.
Two hours later. I had read every riveting word.
The book was a huge publishing success. Mr. Brokaw wrote to
America and America wrote back. He was deluged from the very begin-
ning with letters. He and his staff selected some of the letters and pro-
duced another book. The Greatest Generation Speaks.
Following (he war. the rabbi struggled with how he could serve a God
who would permit such a monumental tragedy. Fortunately, he says, he
was occupied for months raising funds for Jewish resettlement That
gave him time to come to the place where he could say to himself. "If I
don't believe in God. I have more difficulties."
I keep mulling over the experience of a rabbi Rabbi Judah Nadich was
the first Jewish chaplain to serve in Europe. He became a senior chap-
lain. He was sent in with the troops that liberated the German concentra-
tion death camps Rabbi Nadich was to report to General Dwight D
Eisenhower about the needs of the Jewish camp survivors. Not only did
he hear desperate stones of the atrocities of the camps He once walked
into a room at Dachau that contained cremated ashes in piled up gunny-
sacks marked "fertilizer.”
Television news anchor Tom Brokaw wrote a
I book published in 1998 entitled The Greatest
I Generation. Mr. Brokaw wanted to tell about
the World War II American men and women
who saved a decent and democratic future with courage and ingenuity
and just plain grit. As he says, "The book was my way of saying thank
you.”
