He Never Forgot the Friend
who Assisted Him.
New York, March 19.—Lieu-
tenant Commander Leonard
Chenery, retired U. S. N., died
the other day and few, indeed
except his personal friends
knew of his death, and still
fewer were cognizant of an ac-
tion in his life which shows the
timber of which the Navy of the
United States is composed. As
a boy Leonard Chenery strug-
gled to make a plaee for him
self in the world and his great
desire was to get an appoint-
ment to the Naval Acadamy,
but the obstacles m the way
were many and the path he was
hewing out for himself was be-
set with difficulties. One day
there came into his life a man
who befriended him, and assist
ed him in making a name for
I himself. The act of his benefac
tor was never forgotton by the
Inaval officer, and many years
after, when this man was re-
duced to poverty and incapaci-
tated for work the Lieutenant
Commander came to his rescue
|and shared with him the slend
er amount which a Lieutenant
Commander retired, receives
I from the Government. This
was done despite the fact that
the Lieutenant Commander him-
self was ill and not only did be
assist his friend of his boyhood
days but the man’s family as
I well. The story be never told
and only a tew of his intimate
friends knew of the double bur-
den that he carried for years.
The name of the man whom the
Lieutenant Commander repaid
was not made public for friends
of the naval officer desired that
it be withheld.

Austin Tex., March 18.—On
account of the rumors in circu-
lation to the effect that State
Health officer Blunt, who has

Lockhart for the last ten days
was suffering from Bright's dis
ease. The News correspondent
called on Dr. Jones of tqe Quar '
antine Department and asked
him as tu the truth of the ru-
mor. Dr. Jones stated that the
rumor was totally unfounded
and that Dr. Blunt as stated by
his physician, Dr. Preston, in
(Lockhart, was only suffering
from prostration incident to an
attack of LaGrippe and was
now much better and could be-
expected to return to bis official
duties within a few days. —Gal-

The Chicago News
“Deaths from pneumonia now
averages ten a day in Chicago.
If there were that many deaths
daily from the smallpox or bu-
bonic plague, the people would
exercise the greatest precaution
but as it is merely pneumonia,
oi course many folk do not deem
it worth while to be careful.
It is a rather curious fact that
even a case of smallpox in a
community will create atremen*
dou* stir and a vigorous demand
for vaccine virus, while an
equally dangerous ailment may j
prevail in almott epidemic form
without attracting any atten-

precautions, the thing that is
