with his German and English
instructors at Fu-Jen University. He
also ran for president of the 20,000
member student body at the
university. "I am outspoken," he
says, unlike the traditional Chinese
manner of being quiet and reserved.
The upshot of his informal,
caring approach is that the students
work harder, learn and understand
the material, he feels. His office is
often packed with students who
have questions and ask his advice
about problems. For Dr Yeh, it's
part of the teaching process. "You
show your heart, that you care," he
says. "It makes all the difference.
It's a lifetime of giving."

working as a teaching assistant at
the university.
"I Everything you breathe, touch,
wear and eat is chemistry. Our
bodies are made of chemical
compounds. It's a fundamental
science," he says. He taught a year
at Texas A&l University in
Kingsville and applied to SPC
when a position opened in 1989. He
wanted the hands-on atmosphere of
a community college.
His passion for his subject has
spilled over into the classroom. "I
use a different approach in teaching
chemistry; I make the class fun,"

During his
Texas A&l University, Dr. Yeh had
put on a chemistry magic show for
high school students as a recruiting
tool He would like to do the same
as part of recruiting efforts at SPC.
"The show would "simulate what it
would be like to take a chemistry
class at the college. You have to
make things fun for the students,"
he says.
In his classes, he relates
chemistry to discussions about diet,
food, exercise and metabolism. He
uses everyday compounds like
bleach in experiments. He talks to
the students about relationships and
compares them to chemistry.
Strong communications skills help.

Dr. Jesse Yeh serving
as science dept, chair
If Dr. Jesse Yeh had adhered to
Chinese tradition, he would not be
the new chairperson this spring of
the Science Department at South
Plains College He would never
have come to America
"I come from a very traditional
Chinese family," explained Dr
Yeh, who was born and reared in
Taipei, Taiwan. "The first-born
sons stay with their parents."
But Dr Yeh decided to
emigrate to America in 1981 to
establish a new career, one that
eventually led him to SPC and his
new post
"We are proud to have Dr. Yeh
on board as chair of the Science
Department," said Dr Kelvin
Sharp, SPC vice president for
academic affairs. "We feel he will
do an outstanding job."
Dr. Yeh succeeds Bill Wheeler,
assistant professor of geology who
had served as chairman since the
fall of 1998. "Mr Wheeler provided
excellent leadership for the Science
Department, faculty numbers
increased and several important
initiatives, such as construction of
the Agriculture Building, occurred
during his term," said Dr Sharp
Dr. Yeh, a 15-year teaching
veteran, joined SPC in 1989 "I
enjoy teaching, but I know there are
lots of challenges to be faced," he
says. "The biggest challenge for me
is that it’s a new role (as
chairperson). The only thing I know
is teaching in the classroom," he
explains. ”1 hope to serve as a
bridge between faculty and
administration." He also hopes to
recruit more students
department,
faculty and
science facilities.
l eaching and chemistry are in
his blood.
Dr. Yeh had graduated from
Fu-Jen University in Taipei with a
bachelor's degree in chemistry in
1978, served the required two years
in the military as a scfcond
lieutenant with the Marines and
worked as a teaching assistant at the
university.
He had received scholarship
offers from a dozen universities in
the states and accepted the offer at
Texas Tech University.
