AN OPEN LETTER TO THE
SOUTH BELT AREA

I was very Interested In last week’s article In the South Belt
Press dealing with the gameroom In this area.
I am most disturbed to find that the Churches, civic organizations,
nor residents in general have not put pressure on the City of Houston
to see that adequate City parks and recreation facilities are built In
this area.
If one ever travels to the Clear Lake area to see the tremendous
job that those people have done In their field of recreation and parks,
one could not help but realize why they don’t want the city of Houston
annexing them.
Councilman Frank Mancusco, and other city councilmen cannot
even supply the area here in the South Belt area with adequate recrea-
tion and parks, why take on any more territory?
I have seen numerous parks and recreation facilities In other
cities, why not Houston?
Why isn’t pressure brought to bear by the city on developers
to help provide park area when such vast housing projects are
developed?
But then I hear from the developers that the city does not want the
land tor parks, as then It has to be developed.
I wish that the civic groups and the voters could meet and unite
to demand recreation facilities and parks, tor this area.
I am a parent and have to answer my daughter when she asks,
"where can we go in the evenings".
I consider Civic groups and churches the main possible force
behind this area to achieve a large recreation building that would
house pingpong, toosball, pinball and other activities. One person on a
stand with glass on tour side,in the center, raised high, could observe all
the going ons and have a man present to help.
This recreation unit could be open from two-thirty till ten-thirty
dally and Saturday morning.
No smoking Inside or out In the parking area.
This is an excellent school district and the people that I have met
in the area have been extremely nice.
I hope and pray that some kind of pressure can be brought to bear
on the City to supply this need.
It is hard to stop the present game rooms when we really don’t
have anything better tor the teenagers to go to.
Who knows, I may even live long enough to see Fuqua tie into
Telephone Road, Beamer paved to FM 2351, and Hall Road paved.

The Beverly Hills Inter-
mediate Band made quite a
hit at the March 4th Pasa-
dena Band Solo and Ensemble
Contest wnich was held at
Southmore Intermediate. ■
The band took 82 first di-
vision medals, topping the
combined total of the next
two intermediate schools.
Queens was second with 37.
The Beverly Hills band
entered 68 events and came
away with a remarkable rec-
ord of 65 of these 68 winning
1st or 2nd division ratings.
Students from Beverly
Hills brought home the fol-
lowing awards: 33 certifi-
cates for 2nd division rat-
ings; five gold medals; 20
silver medals; 57 bronze
medals tor a total of 82
first division medals.

NEW DRIVING RANGE
Sherry and Jack Elson have announced that, weather
permitting, their Gulf Freeway Driving Range located at
the South Belt Exit and Gulf Freeway is now open for business.
The range is open weekdays from 4:00-10:00 p.m. and Satur-
days and Sundays 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Elsons have
had a bit of bad luck with the weather being what it has been
recently but hope to be able to stay open more from now on.

BIRTHDAY FOR MARGARET
Margaret Hanks of Sagemont celebrated her eighteenth
birthday Saturday. She and a friend enjoyed dinner at Nlnfah’s
and the movie, Rabbit Test on Friday and a trip to Astroworld
on Saturday. Margaret’s parents gave her a new brass bed
and a charge account. Margaret is a senior at Dobie and is
employed at Penney’s.
