Command Sgt. Maj. Demita Vital, the 11th TTSB command sergeant major, introduced
Jackeline Fountain during the Women’s Equality Day observance on Friday. Vital and
Fountain have known each other for over 14 years and even completed one deployment
together.
I deployed with her in OIF-02.
Command Sgt. Maj. Retired Foun-
tain was the first female command
sergeant major in the 87-year-histo-
ry of the Chemical Corps.”
Vital discussed Fountain’s
career in the military and her
current status sitting on the
Harker Heights City Coun-
cil as well as many other
organizations that she has
leadership roles in, as she
welcomed her to the stage.
“I am fired up,” Jackeline
Fountain said. “When I saw
all of the females on honor
guard, the females saying the
Soldier values and the band
playing, what better place to
be at than the Great Place at
Fort Hood, Texas?”
Fountain talked of her
time deployed to Iraq when
she and Vital would meet
with a women’s group. She
credited their weekly involve-
ment in the sisterhood as
providing her strength and
“This milestone came
about after many decades
of women fighting along-
side men.”
Fountain highlighted
women’s suffrage and how
they fought to achieve this
change in equality such as
picketed, protests, hunger
strikes and other strategies
women peacefully prac-
ticed.
“Think about the cour-
age these women dem-
onstrated - Would you
go hungry for what you
believe in?” Fountain
asked.
After talking about the
hard work and determina-
tion of the past women
in history Fountain closed
her speech by inviting her
grandson Kevin onto the
stage to tell everyone to
“Do good, seek peace and
to go for it.”
To conclude the ceremony, the
11th TTSB presented Fountain
with a token of their appreciation
followed by a cake cutting.

since the rectification of the 19th
Amendment for the women’s right
to vote,” Fountain said.
