General Lejeune Off
Corinto
Major-General John Archer Le-
jeune, former Commandant of the
Corps, Mrs. Lejeune and daughter,
arrived off Corinto at ten o’clock on
the morning of June 28th
aboard the United States Army
transport Somme on their way south-
ward. They did not debark.
Brigadier-General Dion' Williams,
Commanding General of the Second
Brigade of Marines, sent a letter and
a beautiful basket of fruit by airplane
to General Lejeune, who acknowled-
ged this thoughtful courtesy with a
radio of appreciation to General
Williams. ______
Captain Friedrick
Visits Managua
Captain Ernest Friedrick, U. S.
Navy, Commanding Officer of the
Cleveland visited Managua during the
past week. He sailed from Corinto to
Managua in a Marine Corps amphib-
bian (Lieutenant Britt), arriving on
July ninth.
That afternoon the Chief of Staff,
Colonel Robert Yancey Rhea, took the
Captain for a drive around Managua
ana environs, after which he had
dinner at the Commanding General’s
Quarters with General and Mrs.
Williams.
I he Aviation Mess took care _ of
Captain Friedrick that night and
the folio ving day sailed him around
Nicaragua that he might see the
Republic from the air. Stopping in

Brigadier-General Dion Williams
(Commanding General, Second Brig-
ade), accompanied by his Aide de-Camp,
First Lieutenant William P. Kelly, on
July sixth, attended a cerem my in the
Office of the Collector-General-of-Cus-
toms incident to the retirement of
$ 200,000 worth of Nicaraguan internal
bonds, the largest single retirement of
•any issue in the his ory of the Repu-
blic.
The drawing was presided over by
Irving A. Lindberg and was attended
by the heads of all fiscal branches of
the Government.
General Williams officia'edin draw-
ing several numbers and on leaving,
heartily congratulated Mr. Lindberg on
Admiral Campbell
In Managua
The Commanding General of the
Second Brigade of U, S. Marines,
Brigadier-General Dion ' Williams,
proceeded to Corinto on Friday the
twelfth of July by Special Train, for
the purpose of meeting Rear-Admiral
Edward Rale Campbell, Commander
of the Special Service Squadron who
arrived Saturday on the Rochester.
Captain Lewis B Reagan and Captain
Edward B. Moore (Major of GN)
accompanied General Williams.
Since the News went to press Friday
evening further facts cannot be slated
but the program called for Admiral
Campbell, General, Williams and party
to arrive in Managua on Saturday;
dinner on Saturday evening at the
Quarters of the Commanding General
with General and Mrs. Williams, fol-
lowed by a big reception at the Servi-
ce Club of American Officials in honor
of Admiral Campbell.
The invitation for this reception is
as follows: “There will be a reception
for Rear-Admiral Edward H. Campbell^
U. S. Navy, Commander Special Ser-'
vice Squadron, at'the Club House, on
13 July at 9:15 p.m. o’clock. All mem-
bers are requested to be in the Club
not later than that hour”.
Brigade Special Order No. 39, July
11, directs that “the Commander,
Southern Area, will please arrange to
hold a Review and Inspection of all
available troops in Managua, at la
Loma Field, Managua, at 9:00 a m. on”

Edward H. Campbell, U. S. Navy,
Commander, Special Service Squad-
ron’,’.

Auction-Bridge
A good time was had by all at the
Auction-Bridge at the Service Club on
Monday evening the eighth of July.
Refreshments were served and a cam-
aradie spirit pervaded the atmos-
phere. There were seven tables- of
auction-bridge.
The entertaiment Committe in
charge was: Lieut. Com. (M. C.) Fred-
ric L Conklin, U. S Navy; Captain
Euvelle Downen Howard; Captain
Maurice Clinton Gregory and Ch. Pay
Cl. Frank Harry O’Neil (G. N.).
First Prize for the Ladies (clothes
hamper) won by Mrs. Reginald H.
Ridgeley; second (six bon 5on basket*),
by Mrs Harold H. Utley; booby prize

General Cole
Dead
Major-General Eli Kelley Cole is
dead! That sad and startling news
came by radio to Nicaragua with
abrupt suddenness. Yes, Eli Kelley
Cokyis dead. He died on the Fourth
of July.

General Cole was a veteran of the
Spanish American War, the Philip-
pine' Insurrection and the World
War. He also served on numerous
Marine Corps-campaigns and in exped-
itions. He wore the Navy Cross and
was h graduate of the Army War
College.

Almost sixty-two years he lived and
of that number he served his country
about forty-five. Graduating from
the Naval Academy in 1888 his duty
called him to all parts of the world
for all kinds of duty. He was appoin-
ted a Second lieutenant of Marines
on July 1, 1890 and was promoted
through the various grades until he
was appointed a Major-General on
June 3, 1924 He served at sea three
years and ten months; on foreign ser-
vice seven years and five months; and
about twenty-seven years and nine
months on other duty which does no t
include his Naval Academy service.

Swimming, La fierced Poo!
Brigade Special Order No. 37 of
July eighth reads as follows: “Effec-
tive this.date, swimming or bathing,
in the swimming pool known as La
Merced, near Tipitapa, is prohibited
to all members of this Brigade”.
Brigade Staff Changes
Brigade Special Order No. 38,' July
11, provided that: “Effective this da-
te, Major Miles R. Thacher, U. S.
Marine Corps, is hereby detailed as
B-3, Fice Captain George T. Hall, U.
8. Marine Corps”, who “is hereby
assigned as Assistant to B-3”.
Major Thacher
Major Miles Russell Thacher arrived
in Managua on Tuesday, July 9th for
duty with the Second Brigade. He
sailed from San Francisco on board
the United Fruit Company’s liner,
the S. S. Esparta (no ladies aboard)
on June 28th and arrived at Corinto
on July 8th, where he stopped over
night with Captain Charles B. Hobbs.
This is Major Thacher’s second
trip to Nicaragua during the present
occupation. He was an Assistant -
