T.T. A "flMEANING OF "TEXAS."
The word "Texas" comes from the Spanish pro-
nunciation "Tejas" of the name of an Indian tribe.
These Indians were encountered by the Spanish
under Captain De Leon, who headed an expedition
from Mexico into Texas in 1689 to investigate the
reported landing of the French. When he arrived
at the site of the settlement, which was La Salle's
colony at fort St. Louis, it had been abandoned,
but there were several Frenchmen living among
the Indians. The Tejas Indians treated De Leon
kindly, and the territory became known as the
land of the Tejas, eventually Texas. The word is
said to have meant friendly or hospitable. The Llano

ESTACADO. ORIGIN OF NAME.
Estacado, or Staked Plains, lying in
xas above the cap rock, received its
e Spanish explorer. Vasquez de Coro-
de an expedition through this part of
in 1541 in search of the "Seven Cities
eyed by the Spaniards to exist some-

way on the treeless, level expanse,
course, thus giving it the name Llano

that the Staked Plains got its name
t that early explorers found many
akes, protruding from the surface,
ave been the remains of a former
ed probably by forest fires.
