EACH HAD WEDDING PRESENT.
Mutual Surprise in Confidences Fal
lowing Marriage.
Last Christmas h middle-a^i-d tin-
plato worker married a widow whose
acquaintance he had made but a few
weeks before while working some lit-
tle dislance away from home.
Sarrah," he said, norvoiisly, at'tor
the guests had departed, 1 have a
weddin' present for ,ve."
"What in It, Johnsaiil Sarrah with
a ■mirk.
"I 'ope ye won't he "fended. Sarrah,"
said John, more : ;;itated than «jver,
"but it Is—er—er-- it is five of 'em."
"Five of what?" asked Sarrah.
"Five children!" blurted out John,
desperately, anticipating a scene. "1
rlidn't. tell ye 1 'ad children—live of
'em."
Sarrah took the news calmly; in
fact, she appeared relieved.
"Oh, well, John," she said. "that, do
make, it easier for me io tei't ye. Five
is not so bad as me, whatever. Seven
1 'aye got!"
"What!" howled John.
"Seven," repeated Sarrah, compos-
edly. "That is my weddin' present to
ye, John." -Ladies' I lome Journal.

Great Cricketer's Simple Tribute to
His Own Worth.
Ill ISSTi there was a ureal celebra-
tion in London in honor of llr Sam-
uel Johnson, and among those in at-
tendance was the Australian "crack"'
cricketer, Bonner, then at the height
of his fame.
As one of the guests, says the com-
piler of the recently published "Let-
ters" of the late Dr. George Hirkbeck
Ilill, Bonner's health was proposed.
Mis response was noteworthy.
"After seeing the way in which Dr.
Johnson's memory is revered," he said,
with great simplicity. "I am not sure
that I woukj not rather have been
6uch a man "than have gained my Awn
greatest triumphs in cricket."—

Weeks by Cuticura.
"After having the measles my whole
head and nc-ck were covered wilh scaly
sores about, as large as a penny. They
were just as thick as they could be.
My hair all came out. 1 lot the trou-
ble run along, taking the doctor's blood
remedies and. rubbing on salve, but it
did not seem to get any better. It
stayed that way for about six months;
then 1 got ;i set of the Cuticura Rem-

a big difference, and in three weeks
it w.i- well entirely and 1 have not and

MOTHERHOOD
Tin
4>-'
MRS. JAMES CHESTER
The first requisite of a good
mother is good health, and the ex-
perience of maternity should not be
approached without careful physical
preparation, as a woman who is in
good physical condition transmits to
her children the blessings of a good
constitution.
Preparation for healthy mater-
nity is accomplished by Lydia E.
I'inkham's Vegetable Compound.
which is made from native roots and
herbs, more successfully than by any
other medicine because it gives tone
and strength to the entire feminine
organism, curing displacements, ul-
ceration and inflammation, and the
result, is less suffering aud more children healthy at birth. For mom
than thirty years
Lydia E. Pinkham'sVegetabSe Compound
has been the standby of American mothers in preparing: for ehiidbirtl*.
Note what^Irs. Jany.sChcster.oMS? YV. 3T,th St., New Vork says in this
letter;—Dear Mrs. T'ihkha.m:-"! wish every expectant mother knew about
Lydia E. l'inlcham's Vegetable Compound. A neighbor who had learned
of its great value at this trying period of a woman's life urfted me to try
it and I did so, and 1 cannot say enough in regard to the good it didme.
1 recovered quickly arid am in the best of health now."
Lydia H. Piukhums Vegetable Compound is certainly a successful
remedy for the peculiar weaknesses and ailments of women.
It has cured almost every form of Female Complaints, Dragging Sensa-
tions, VVe'ak Back. Falling and Displacements, Inflammation, Ulcera-
tions and Organie Diseases, of Women and is invaluable ju preparing for
Childbirth and during tlie Change of Life.

HOW HE BROKE A RECORD.
Took Last Jump from Fcrgetter, Rub-
ber Home Plate.
Billy Powell, greatest hurdler the
west has produced, was referring to
his college days en the Berkeley
track.
"There were five in the race. 1
drew the extreme outside lane,
which gave nte a bad finish stretch.
But I got. a peach of a start, swept
the curve like 11 yacht nn her beam
ends and came down the straight
taking the jumps in beautiful style.
I felt. 1 had a varsity record in me
at that clip and 1 threw all tny
power into the final strides. .Spring-
lug for the ninth hurdle 1 fairly
flew through the air, and, dashing
to the finish, broke the tape, the
world's record for the low hurdles,
for the 220-dash. and for the run-
ning broad jump, the time being
_1 fiat, and my last jump over two
hurdles at once, clearing 43 feet and
some Inches.
"Whew!" exclaimed 011<% Snedigar,
"why weren't the records ever al-
lowed?"
"Well," continued Powell, "when
they went to measure that leap,
Col. Edwards started to shove his
cane, in. to indicate my foremost spike
mark, and the slick jumped out of his
hand. They scraped the short grass
away and found a solid rubber home
plate imbedded where the varsity bat-
tery used to practice."—Sun Francisco

Sheer white goods, in fact, any fine
wash goods when new, owe much of
their attractiveness to the way they
are laundered, this being done in a
manner to enhance their textile beau-

fh India the sap of the female bam-
boo tree is used for medicinal pur-
poses. "Tabasheer." or "bansloehan,"
is sold in all Indian bazars, as it has
been known ,'rom the earliest times as
a medicinal agent. It is also known
in Borneo, and was an article of com-

east. Its properties are said to be
strengthening, tonic and cooling. It
has been analyzed and has been shown
