business men have lived in town
only ten years or less. Others
were born here. It is believed no
history is necessary to introduce
them.
E. J. Cussen came to Canadian
in 1915. After leaving the army
he has engaged in the law busi-

to Texas from Tennessee in 1889,

career, Judge Grigsby formed a
law partnership with Temple
Houston, son of General Sam
Houston; and Judge Frank Wil-
lis. father of .Ne<wt and Frank;
Willis, all three former district
judges of this district. This same
trio of attorneys left Montague;
county together and located at j
Mobeetie, when it was the capitol
of the Texas Panhandle,
The late Judge Grigsby was
born in Fayette county. Virginia
/on June 29, 1856 and was almost
78 years >of age when his life was
claimed by heart trouble.
When he was about ten
years of age, he came with his:
parents. Mr. and Mrs. James j
Milton Grigsby to Montague
County. Mr. Grigsby, as an at-
torney, raised a family of law-
yers and miners. Two of the
brothers, both deceased, were
Judge Henry Grigsby and Judge
W. H. Grigsby. The other three,
Ward, Mont and John, followed
for many years gold mining They
are also dead. Only one sister,
M.rs. J. E. Stinson, Chickasha,
Oklahoma, survives.
When Judge Grigsby first came
to the Mobeetie country, he en-
tered the cattle business. Then in
1894, he returned to Montague
County, where he stayed for five
years, coming back to Mobeetie
in 1899. Shortly after his return
he was elected County Judge of
the Masonic and W. O. W. fra-
ternities. He had always been a
Wheeler County, in which office
he served for six years. He later
moved to Roberts County where
he served as a county official.
The Grigsby family came to
Ochiltree in 1913 and when Per-
ryton was started in 1919. they
moved to this city. Here in the
fall of 1920, he was elected Coun-
ty Judge, and served with honor
for ten successive years.
The Judge had been a Deacon
in the Baptist church for 'over
30 years. He was a member of
devout church and Sunday school
woper. It hus been often told of
the Judge that while he was
Judge of Wheeler County, lie
would go to the court house ear-
ly on Sunday morning to clean-
up the district courtroom after
the regular Saturday night dance,
then walk back home and get
ready for his duties as Sunday-
school superintendent.—Ochiltree

adian the last 25 years. He was
born and reared west of Chey-
enne, Okla. He has engaged in
