Cross
Season
Cross-country track season,
1962, is here, and every day
since the beginning of school—
regardless of the kind of weath-
er prevailing—a group of har-
riers under the watchful eye of
Coach J. H, (Cap) Shelton
have been running on a plowed
dirt surface in preparation for
a Saturday meet against Texas
A&M at College station.
Last year, the clubs met head
on twice, andl each time, a single
point decided the winner. Bach
team won once.
The team will be led by Cap-
tain Glenn Petty, who Is now In
his fourth year as a Yellow
Jacket einderman. Petty Is most
noted for Ms contribution to

teams, and for winning the con-
ference half-mile race during his
freshman and sophomore cam-
paigns.
Two other mainstays on the
team are seniors Lowell Bishop
and Prank Santiago. They, like
Petty, have also contributed to
HPC two-mile relay outfits.
Another middle-distance man,
who is sweating his way around
the cross-country course, is JacR
Petty. He earned a track letter
last year as a freshman, and is
showing steady improvement.
A man who finds running long
distances "right down his al-
ley" is Tommy Sikes. Sikes, who
contributed greatly to the HPC
conquest of the Lone Star Con-
ference track championship last
May, won the mile run, and was
second in the two-mile race.
A welcome newcomer to the
HPC track team is Bill Thomas
from Scotland. He has run a
4:08.6 mile, and has looked ex-
ceptionally good in work-outs
to date.

A fellowship for graduate
study in India has been offered
to Howard Payne College stu-
dents who qualify, said Dale
Maness, head of the Department
of Mathematics.
"This schooling would be a
full year of work acceptable at
any college back in the states,"
Maness emphasized, "India has
good schools."
The student deadline for ap-
plication is Monday, Oct. 15. The
student would) be assistant Eng-
lish teacher at the college to
which he is attached.
Maness also pointed out that
students contemplating mission-
ary lives could use this oppor-
tunity to experiment. Teaching
Indians English would give the
students an introduction to the
Asiatic languages, Maness said.
All living expenses, travel costs
and tuition are covered under
the grant
The assistantship involves ap-
proximately 12 hours of class-
room instruction in English us-
age and the grading of papers,
plus some assistance in informal
conversation sessions. The as-
sistants work under the direc-
tion of a professor of English,
and are not required to have
previous teaching experience or
to have majored in English.
Students interested in the
political and social sciences and
in the humanities are especially
encouraged to apply before Mon-
day.
