Jackets Open LSC Play
It will be a clean start for
the Howard Payne College
Yellow Jackets when they open
Lone Star Conference play here
Saturday night against Sana
Houston State. The Stingers
are currently sporting a 2-2
won-lost record on the year.
Sul Ross, which started the
chase after the elusive confer-
ence crown with a 16-13
triumph over Southwest Texas,
the team picked to win the
championship in pre-season
polls, rests this Saturday while
the Bobcats entertain the An-/
gelo State Rams, the team the
Jackets downed last week, 19-0.
The Bearcats from Huntsville
may be doubly tough this week
after dropping a 19>-13 decision
to Tarleton State last Saturday
in their own back yard1. The
Kats were leadng 13-0 going
into the final quarter.
Earlier this, season the Kats
defeated Northwestern Okla-
homa 32-6, then pounced on the
National University of Mexico,
42-0.
The Bearkats, according to
head coach Paul Pierce, will be
trying to get into the first di-
vi son of the conference stand-
ings. After winning the LSC
crown and the NAIA champion-
ship in 1964, the Kats stumbled
to sixth in the conference with
a 4-6 record last year.
Halfback Billy Arlen, two-
time all conference and all-
NAIA choice, wil be leading
the Bearkat ground , forces. The
former Houston-Austin star has
rolled up 1,180 yards in the
past two seasons.
Dennis Oann, who played
his freshman year at Rice be-
fore transferring to SHSCwill
get the nod at the signal-calling
position, and will direct a step-
ped up Sam Houston air attack.
Gann passed for 558 yards
and eight touchdowns in 1965
while sharing the starting as-
signment with veteran Norman
Peterson.
Gann's favorite targets will
be end John Matthews, and
halfback Thel Walters.
Sam Houston's defense will
be led by old hands like all-
NAIA linebacker David Martin, >
tackles Lloyd Long, and Glenn
Gray.
Newcomer Bruce Moss, an
all-Southwest Conference
freshman guard at TCU last
year is also expected to help
out the Kats' defense.
The Jackets will counter
with one of the finest defenses
in the state. In total offense,
HPC opponents have 693 net
yards to the Stinger's 946. The
Jacket offense has had the ball
249 times to the opponent's 212.
Spearheading the defense
will be Richard Callahan and
John Benson at the tackle pos-
itions, Larry Jones and Butch
Berthaiume at the ends, Jim
Sullivan at middle guard, Jim
Hargrove and Jim Farrell as
the linebackers, Billy Ingram
as the rover, Troy Kennedy and
Jim Wood at the halfback slots
and Doug Holtzclaw at safety.
The Jackets will be led of-
fensively by Steve Herron,
who continues to lead the in-
dividual total offense statistics.
Herron has rushed for 142
yards and passed for 160.
Weldon Tittle has rushed for
168 yards, while halfback Jim
Wood follows with 174 yards
rushing and 24 passing.
Charlie Johnson has carried
the ball 41 times for 116 yards
and two. touchdowns while
Herbie Spoon has 98 yards in
20 carries and one touchdown.
The Jackets dropped last
year's tilt with the Bearkats
by a score of 14-0, failing on
several occasions to cash in on
breaks. The same Jacket team
will have that in mind when
the game gets underway to-
morrow, 7:30 p.m., at Lion
Stadium^
Another important game in
the LSC will find McMurry
tangling with Bast Texas at
Commerce. Texas A&I will host
Stephen P. Austin in Kings-
vine in a battle that could
well help to determine the con-
ference champion.
Yellow Jackets Dehorn
Angelo State Rams, 19-0
The Howard Payne Yellow
Jackets scored a touchdown in
each of the first three quarters
Saturday night against the San
Angelo State Rams and then
made those three TD's stand
up for their second win of the -
season, 19-0.
The Stingers dominated the
game with their ball-hawking
type of football. HPC handled
the ball 82 times and the Rams
could only manage to run 53
plays, most of those coming in
the second half.
The first two Jacket touch-
downs came on the end of dri-
ves of 89 and 68 yards. After
taking the opening kickoff, the
Paynemen consumed the next
9 minutes and 22 seconds in a
march to the goal line spark-
ed by a running pass from
halfback Jim Wood to wingback
Herbie Spoon.
After a penalty had set the
Jackets deep in their own end
of the. field, Wood took a pitch
from quarterback Steve Herron,
and it looked as if he were
going to skirt around right
end, but instead, he rifled a
pass to Spoon who had worked
himself clear in the ASC se-
condary.
WOOD SCORES
Wood, who turned in a brill-
iant performance on offense,
gained 38 of the 68 yards on
the first drive. Weldon Tittle,
had 14. The score came on the
seventeenth play, as Wood was
called on for the final yard.
Richard Callahan's kick was
good and HPC was on its way
to victory, leading 7-0 with
5:38 left in the initial period.
A pass interception by Troy
Kennedy in the second period
opened the second touchdown
drive deep into HPC territory
on the 11-yard line.
Quarterback Steve Herron
exploited full talent from
Wood, Spoon and freshman
Charlie Johnson to march 89
yards for the second touch-
down.
With a third and goal from
the Angelo State seven, Spoon
scored on a hard driving run
with 3:08 left in the half. The
extra point attempt was block-
ed, and at intermission the
Jackets had a comfortable 13-0
lead.
THIRD SCORE
HPC's third score was set up
in a hurry again on a pass in-
terception by Kennedy. The 188
pound safety hauled down a
James Truelove pass on the
35-yard line and returned it all
the way to the one.
Three plays later, the Jackets
lit up the scoreboard with six
more points, as Herron hurled
himself across the goal line
with 7:17 left in the third
quarter.
The try for two extra points
failed, but the Jackets had
their second win of the season.
RUGGED DEFENSE
Again Howard Payne's de-
fense was punishing, especially
in the secondary, led by Ken-
nedy, Holtzclaw and Spoon.
Defensive linemen led by
Callahan kept plenty of pres-
sure on ASC quarterbacks
Truelove, Gonzales, and Boll
Johnson.
The defense was so rugged
that it allowed the Rams to a
minus seven yards rushing,
quite a feat in itself.
Linebacker Bill Breding led
BACK-OF-THE-WEEK-Jim Wood, HPC junior letterman who
has been playing both offense and defense for the Yellow Jack-
ets, has been named back-of-the-week in the Loan Star Con-
frence. Wood lead HPC to its 19-0 win over San Angelo State
last Saturday.
all tacklers with seven. John
Benson was another notable
performer in the HPC defense,
recovering one fumble and ac-
counting for several big losses
for the Rams.
Wood led the HPC rushers
with 68 yards in 20 carries fol-
lowed by Tittle with 38 in 11
carries, Herron 28 in eight
tries, Spoon 23 in six, Holtz-
claw 19 in two, and Johnson. 10
in four.

Just about the stingiest
group of defensive men in the
country must be at Howard
Payne College.
For in their last three games
the Yellow Jackets, who open
Lone Star Conference play
here Saturday night against
Sam Houston State College,
have allowed their opponents
but a total of 68 net yards
rushing. .: —• v ;
Abilene Christian College
made but 62 yards, Tarleton
State could come up with but
13, and Angelo State College,
which fell to the Jackets last
Saturday, found themselves on
a minus seven ledger.
LSC coaches had predicted
that Coach Joe James' outfit,
winners of but two tilts in 10
starts last year, could come up
with the best line, both offen-
sively and defensively this sea-
son.
2-2 RECORD
Although the Jackets will
enter the contest against SHSC
With an even Stephen 2-2 won
and lost record, they have held
their last three opponents to
only an average of 113.7 yards
on total offense.
