Grimes County's White Man’s Union Association primary was
set for Saturday, March 29, and the resignations of Sheriff Dick
Johnson and Tax Assessor-Collector Guy Davis were rejected at
the W.M.U.A. convention held in the district courtroom of the
courthouse at Anderson Monday afternoon. There were few
remaining when the important resolutions emmittee went
executive session.
The report of the resolutions committee was adopted as fol-
lows;..
“Whereas thc Legislature of the State of Texas has staggered
the terms of county officers, and
“Whereas we are anxious to maintain the W.M.U.A. of Grimes
County and in order to comply with the by-laws of the W.M.UA
and maintain the drawing every four years.
"Therefore, be it resolved that ^11 offices be drawn at this
time and the precincts that draw the office of sherlfand tax as-
sessor-collector shall not run until the year of 1960 in a W.M.UA.
primary.
“Be it further resolved that the
resignations of Dick Johnson and
Guy Davis not be accepted."
Earl Harris, speaking against
the resolutions, said that he felt
that the drawings should be
held every two years. The vote
of the 33-member executive com-
mittee was 9 to 24 in favor of
adopting the resolutions com-
mittee’s report. '
Bolling it down,it means that
this year the voters of Grimes
County will elect county officers
as specified by state law; name-
ly’"county judge, county clerk,
district clerk, county treasurer,
county school superintendent
and county commissioners for
Precincts 2 and 4.
Sheriff Dick Johnson and Tax
Assessor-Collector Guy Davis will
remain in office (or another two

More than seventy-five per
cent of the proceeds will go to
the Brazos County Crippled Chil-
dren’s Therapy Center at Bryan.
This out-patient center began
operations August L 1957 for
physical therapy treatments of
crippled children in Brazos, Bur-
leson, Grimes, Madison, Robert-
son and Washington counties.

Well underway at the Nava-
sota Telephone Company is a
$28,000 expansion program
scheduled for completion this
year, George Franks, plant man-
ager, said today.
Service is being extended into
the Carlos community. This was
started last fall and will be
completed in approximately six

built in the Stoneham, Planters-
ville and Courtney areas.
Additional central office equip-
ment will be installed to handle
the load which now averages
12,000 calls per day. The com-
pany now has a total of 2,460
phones on its lines over the
county.
Communities now being served
include Richards, Anderson,
Washington, Shiro, Plantersville,
Millichn, Courtney, White Hall,
Retreat and Piedmont.

H. W. (Joe) Haynie of Rich-
ards has authorized the Exam-
iner-Review to announce his
candidacy for the office of Coun-
ty Judge subject to the Action of
the WM.UA. Primary Saturday,
March 29.
A life-long resident of Rich-
anta, Mr. Haynie has been con
nected with Ira Haynie A Son,
general merchandise store, for
more than thirty years. All mem-
bers of his immediate family are
now residents of Grimm,County.
He has for many years been
interested in the civic affairs of
the county.
Having had experience in the
retail business and in dairy
farming, Mr. Haynie feels that
he is capable of working for and
with the citizens of Grimes Coun-
ty in the capacity of County
Judge.

In the traditional drawing for
offices Bedias drew sheriff and
Navasota drew county tax asses-
sor-collector, both of which will
be up for election two years from
now. No candidate from either of
these localities will be eligible,
under W.M.U.A. rules, to run for
office this year. ,
Of the offices up for election
this year, Shiro and Richards
drew county judge; Anderson
drew county treasurer; Iola
drew district clerk; and the area
from Courtney to Plantersville
drew county clerk. Candidates
for the respective offices must
come from these areas.
Election Dates
The deadline for filing for the
March 29 primary—was set at
midnight Saturday, March 15
and the final date for absentee
