To Ride Horses
Wagons To Fair
The opening of the Diamond Ju-
bilee exposition ot the 1960 State
Fair of Texas. October 8. will wit-
ness the arrival in Dallas of a
group of trail - worn "pioneers."
The horse and wagon riders will
cover the 90 miles from Preston
Ben on Lake Texoma to Dallas in
tune to ride in the State Fair open-
ing day parade.
The ride will parallel Texas'
first great cattle trail north, the
Shawnee Trail It will be the first
annual Shuwnee Trail Ride, spon-
sord by the Dallas County Mounted
Sheriff's Posse
Sidney Latham, former Secre-
tary of State of Texas, who is wa-
gonmaster of the Shawnee Trail
ride, has released a preliminary
list of some of the distinguished
Texans who will make the ride.
Top "pioneer" is 82-> ear-old T. A.
Hintord, former sheriff of Harris
county, who will be riding his fa-
mous white mule.
Captain Tom Hickman. 74. of
Gainesville is the oldest living re-
tired Texas Hanger. He will first
ride his horse from Gainesville to
Texoma and then down the Shaw-
nee Trail, about a 7-day ride in all.
In 1840. the Secretary of War of
the Republic of Texas. Albert Sid-
ney Johnston sent Captain William
G Preston to establish a cavalry
post on the Red RWer at the cattle
i rossing of the Shawnee Trail This
community became Known as Pres-
ton Bend and the Shawnee Trail as
Preston Hoaii Captain Preston's
grandson. Hoy Preston. 72, of
Grand Prairie will also ride with
today's "pioneers."

"Red" Wright, 71, former sheriff
