F. Dewey charged Saturday night
that Sen. Jolfti F. Kennedy's speech
writers have accepted Soviet prop-]
aganda. •
"This borders on the dangerous,"!
declared Dewey in a speech pre-
pared for a GOP fund raising
dinner.
The former New York governor
said Kennedy, the Democratic
presidential nominee, has said the
Soviet economy is growing at three
times the rate 'he U.S. economy.
"1 touk the official Russian fig-
ures. as if they were true, tor
1940 and their similar figures for
19B0 and compared them with
ours." said Dewey.
"Measured in terms of our gross
national product, the United States
led the Russians in 1940. $230 bil-
lion to $102 billion. In 19t>0. the
figure is estimated to he S510 bil-
lion tor the United States and only
8)27 billion lit- the Russians.
"In other words, we have' in-
creased our lead over the Russims
from £128 billion in 1940 to $283
billion in 1960. Now this is the
story according to the Soviet's own
figures.
"But can we trust the Commu-
nist figures about their growth '
Dewey sail! Soviet economist
Stanislav Gustavovich Strtiinilui
has written that Soviet figures are
exaggerated by about one-third
He said Harvard economist
Abram Bergson. an expert on So-
viet production has indicated that
even Strumilin's calculations are
quite dubious and that Soviet pro-
duction is less than half Struuii-
lin's figures.
"So there you have it." Dewey
said. "Whoever wrote that speech
of Sen. Kennedy's lias been read-
ing Russian propaganda. Worse
bor-
than that, he believes il. hi:
ders on the dangerous."
"It Sen. Kennedy's advisors ac-
cept Russian economic propaganda
as true and put it in his speeches,
will they do the same with Russian
political propaganda?" lie asked.
"1 leave ttie ansewer to you, but
I will state one conclusion flatly:
Tht. senator picks his advisors
very badlv."
