The drive back is always the most difficult,
because it's so hard to leave. But there is nothing
that can be done. Families get spread out, and time
goes by so fast. You only see each other on special
occasions like Christmas, Thanksgiving, or when
someone passes away. And you always ask each
other "why don't we get together more." Everyone
lives their own life, but it's nice to know your own
life is tied into other's lives.
Driving back to school I light up my last ciga-
rette and inhale every last bit of smoke to the very
bottom. I feel the heat on my fingertips as I take in
the very last drag and hold it in as long as I can. I
try to hold on for just one more moment. But
knowing that it has passed I put the butt in the ash-
tray and snuff out the rest of the fire. And then I
wonder, now what did I do with that lighter?16
