THE GALLEON
But that boy ain't never around anyway. With this
pond and things being looted out of the old barn,
this place is a nuisance to that boy."
"There is an old barn?" Katlyn inquired.
"Oh yea. It's just a short walk to the East.
The old house and barn are over there. The house
is empty, but the barn is full of old junk," the man
replied.
Then his tone changed.
"You kids don't need to be snooping
around there though. Or this old pond. It's a
spooky, run down place."
"Spooky," Gracie stammered.
"Well, I don't want to scare you, but if it
will keep you away, I'll tell you a little history.
Mr. Mackey was a lunatic," he began. "His wife
left him and their boy one day out of the blue, and I
suppose that drove him over the edge. He moved
out of the house and into the barn. The house has
sat empty ever since. One day he got out there and
started buildin' a cottage. He told some locals that
it was for the witch that was coming. One morning
Mackey called the police and reported his boy
missing. After a short search they found the boy
tied up in a chair inside the cottage. Mackey in-
sisted the witch did it, but everyone knew he was
crazy. The police wanted to take the boy away
from Mackey, but he was almost sixteen so they
didn't bother. A few days later Mackey took his
boy out to the pond and drowned him. Then he
went inside that old barn and died. Just like that.
Wasn't even suicide. Since then rumors have
spread that Mackey's ghost lures children into the
pond. I don't know about that, but there have been
several children found in the pond over the years.31
