II. Tile following extract from  an order received from headquarters
Department of Miississippi is published for tile information and guid-
ance of the commanding general of the Post and )efenses of Memphis,
and the organization of tile troops composing his commnan( will be as
therein designated until further orders:
The One hundlred and eighth and One huli(lred and thirteenth Illinois Volunteer
Infantry will constitute the First Brigade, (col. George i. Hoge coinlnandig, and
the Forty-sixth. Fifty-fifth, Fifty-ninth, and Sixty-lirst IT. S. Colored Infantry
will constitute the Seconid Brigade, C(I. Frank A. Kendrick conunandling, of' the
Post and Defenses of Memphis. The light batteries are en(ler the direct orders of
the chief of artillery I)istrict of West Tennessee, who will receive instructions trom
the district conllander.
The Third and Seventh U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery and the Sixty-eighth U. S.
Colored Infantry will constitute the garrison of Fort Pickering, Col. I. . G. Kappner
commanding. The Eighth Iowa Volunteer Infantry will reiilai on (Inuty as provost-
guard regiment of the city of Memphis, and will exclusively perform . the police and
1provost-guard duty of' the city. The commanding officer f tihe regineit will repl)ort
to the conimanling general Post and Defenses of lMemphis, in conpliaice with
Special Orders, No. 12, paragraph 4, current series, headquarters I departmentt of
Mississippi. A suitable site for the erection of barracks will le selected by the
chief engineer int the central portion of the city for this regiment. Three principal
guardhouses will 1)o erected-ole in the center cast of the bayou, one o the right,
one on the left on the west side of the Gayoso :layoh-romi the lumber nlow ill the
several barracks occupied by that regiment. The  iie Oe hundred and twentieth Illi-
nois Volunteer infantry will furnish all guards for depots, hospitals, & .c. The coin-
nmanding officer will report to the general conunanding the I'Post and l)efiPses of
Memphis for orders. A suitable ground will ble selectedl by the cicl' e(lgineer for
the erection of barrackss for this regiment. Both regiments, as soon as their qluar-
ters are erected, will relieve all guards daily. Permanent guards will le altogether
discontinued. All guards for depots, & c., which ('anot be fulrnisledl by those two
regiments will be Iurnislhed by the (lislounted c;a\alry. All guards of other regi-
ments but the two above named will be relieved as soon as lpracticablce.
