Money available for group projects
Educational institutions and
organizations in 17 States and the
District of Columbia have received
35 grants totaling more than $1,8
million for the Group Projects
Abroad Program this summer and
during the 1975-76, school yearK
HEW's Office of Education
announced today. = ,
Twenty-eight of the grant/are
to improve- U.S. education
programs- in modern foreign
language training and area studies.
These projects 'are being
conducted in Egypt, India,
Pakistan, Poland, the U.S.S.R.,
Tunisia, Yugoslavia, Japan and
Seven grants fund U.S. ethnic
heritage projects in Japan,
Mexico, and West. Africa.
The grants, intended to
increase the competency ot U.S."
education personnel and'
institutions in modern foreign
languages and area studies, were
made under the Mutual
Educ-at'onal and Cultural
Exchange Act (Fulbright-Hays) of
1961 (Public Law 87-256).
Projects in Egypt, India,
Pakistan, Poland, and Tunisia
were financied in whole or in part
by U.S.-o\wned' local currencies
made available under the
provisions of the Agricultural
Trade Development and
Assistance Act of 1954 (Public-
Law 83-480), as amended.
The selected "projects include
advanced trainirtg centers, faculty
and teacher seminars and projects
for the development of
Experienced educators at the
elementary, secondary, .and
postsecondary levels, as well as
undergraduate and gradu-ate
students planning to teach, are
Institutions and organizations
receiving grants are reponsible for
selecting qualified participants.
