James H. Watkins,
Austin, and Jerry Flem-
mons, Fort Worth, will
receive the 1983 TSU
Distinguished Alumni
Awards at Homecoming
Oct. 29 with Dr. O.A.
Grant to be honored as
Distinguished Faculty
Member.
The awards will be
presented at the
Distinguished Alumni
Luncheon in the TSU din-
ing hall at 11:30 am.

Watkins
Watkins is a native of
San Saba and attended
Tarleton from 1938-40. He
graduated from the US
Military Academy in 1943
and received his wings as
a pilot. He holds a
master's degree in elec-
trical engineering from
California Institute of
Technology and has done
additional graduate work
at the University of
Texas, University of
Maryland, University of
California at Los
Angeles, George
Washington University,
and Georgetown
University.
Watkins flew 50 combat
missions in the B-17
; - bomber in the European
-Theater of Operations
' dtiring World War II.
During the Vietnam con-
flict he was Chief, Air
-• Force Advisory Group,
U.S. Military Assistance
. Command. He flew more
than 200 combat mis-
sions, mostly with the
Vietnamese Air Force, in
12 different types of
aircraft.
Watkins has also serv-
ed as an instructor at
West point, in the office of
Assistant for Atomic
Energy in the develop-
ment of nuclear weapons,
at the Pentagon, and as a
commander at Randolph
Air Force Base, San
Antonio.
He retired in 1974 with
30 years of service in the
Air Force. He is past
president of the Tarleton
Alumni Association and
served on the Target 2000
committee for The Texas
A&M University System.
Flemmons has been a
member of the Fort
Worth Star-Telegram
editorial staff for the past
20 years. He is also a con-
tributing editor to
Southern Living
Magazine and the author
of "Texas" and "Amon;
The Life of Amon
Carter."

While at Tarleton he
was an All-America
quarterback and in 1980
was selected to the
Tarleton Athletic Hall of
Fame. Flemmons
graduated from East
Texas State University
where he began his
writing career in the
sports information office.
Throughout his career
Flemmons has been in-
volved in on-the-scene
reporting at the Presi-
dent Kennedy assassina-
tion, the shooting of Lee
Harvey Oswald, the
Charles Whitman sniping
at the UT Tower, the in-
vasion of Czechoslavakia
by the Russians, a CIA
flight over South Viet-
nam, and the devastating
Wichita Falls tornado.
Reporting of the tornado
earned him a nomination
for the Pulitzer Prize as
well as selection as
Texas' best writer-
reporter of the year.
Flemmons is now serv-
ing on the Tarleton Presi-
dent's Commission.
Grant
Grant is a native of
Breckenridge and is com-
pleting 35 years on the
Tarleton faculty. He is a
graduate of Hardin-
Simmons University and
holds the Ph.D. degree in
political science from
Georgetown University,
Washington,D.C.
He served as head of
the Tarleton Department
of Social Sciences from
1967 to 1976 when he relin-
quished the position to
return to fulltime
teaching. A-
In 1962 he became the
first Tarleton faculty
member to receive the
Piper Award for outstan-
ding teaching in Texas
and in 1981 he received
the Tarleton Distinguish-
ed Teaching Award.
