lectual development of humankind.
Dr. Michael Wyschogrod meets all
criteria with distinction. Currently, he
is a professor at the University of
Houston and Director of Religious
Studies there. He is nationally known
as a scholar, author and lecturer. Writ-
ing in both English and German, his
articles range from Voices of Ortho-
doxy to A Jewish Perspective of In-
carnation.
A familiar theme in his writings is a
continuing dialogue between Judaism
and Christianity. He is the author of six
books and more than 100 articles. He
began his career at City University of
New York, after earning degrees at the
City College and Columbia University.
A very important meeting for par-
ents of children eligible for Bar/Bat
Mitzvah between August, 1999 and
June, 2000 has been set for Monday,
January 26th, at 7:30 p.m. in the
Gordon Chapel. It is essential that
parents or their proxy be present at
the meeting with Cantor Gerber
and Director of Religious Education
Steve Daum.
A tentative calendar with available
dates and a “Date Preference Form”
was mailed to all families with stu-
dents in Fifth Grade who attend ei-
ther Religious School or Shlenker
School.
Any interested family who did
not receive this information should
contact the Religious School Office
immediately.

He rose from the rank of Lecturer to
Professor of Philosophy and Chairman
of the Department of Philosophy at
City University’s Baruch College. He
was named Professor Emeritus of Phi-
losophy in September, 1992. In recog-
nition of his outstanding contributions
to Jewish scholarship, Seton Hall Uni-
versity conferred on him the Doctor of
Hebrew Letters degree.
He has held other academic ap-
pointments at the Bar-Ilan University
in Israel, Heidelberg College for Jew-
ish Studies in Germany, the University
of Berne and the Princeton Theologi-
cal Seminary, as well as participating
recently in Fall CJE.

Sachs. Dr. Wyschogrod is the lecturer
for the Rabbi Hyman Judah Schachtel
Symposium sponsored by The Institute
of Religion, Texas Medical Center.
The Schachtel Symposium was es-
tablished by the Institute’s Board of
Trustees in 1993 as a memorial to
Rabbi Schachtel who served as Senior
Rabbi at Beth Israel for more than 40
years. The Symposium annually pre-
sents an outstanding Jewish theolo-
gian, philosopher, physician or teacher
whose interests lie in religion, medi-
cine, ethical values or Judaism’s unique
