Now that everyone has settled
into the normal Tarleton schedule it's _
time to think about all the activities
RHAC (Resident Hall Activity Com-
mittee) has to offer dorm residents.
RHAC was introduced a few se-
mesters ago to provide money for
activities for residents.
RHAC council offers activities as
varied as movie tickets and Six Flags"
tickets.
The organization also provides
funding for other committees within
the resident halls including Safety
and Facilities, F.O.O.D (Fellowship
of Organized Diners) and Recreation/
Intramurals.
This semester RHAC has a new
game plan and is striving to make
this semester really exciting for dorm
residents.
Katie Penn, RHAC adviser and
Women's Housing coordinator, is
ready for the new semester and hopes
to get all dorm residents involved.
Also helping Penn is Susan
Guidry. She has taken the position of
treasurer and will be overseeing all
monetary funds. Guidry will be
available starting next week to help
residents with purchase order num-
bers and writing proposals.
If you are interested in RHAC
contact your resident adviser. Meet-
ings are held every Wednesday at
5:15 p.m. in the lobby of the women's
dorm.

Recipients of financial aid were
introduced to a welcome change dur-
ing the opening week of Tarleton's
,CT
I# an effort to increase efficiency
and decrease the wait time of stu-
dents, business services and finan-
cial aid departments used a combina-
tion of new and old computer sys-
tems. "This combination took about
1,500 students out of the lines," said
Dr, Skip Landis, director of the Fi-
Tarleton faced problems last fall
due to necessary computer conver-
sions, which prevented the Financial
Aid Department from starting pro-
cessing until late June.
"With 80 percent of the students
pn'financial aid of some sort, we just
cpiild not getitall dpne," said Landis*
This spring,' however, the Financial
Aid Department had more time to
successfully complete its task.
In the past, students had to stand
in two separate lines for Stafford
Loans and Pell Grants, now these are
combined.
nancial Aid Department. David Fay, a graduate student
Tarleton students chosen
from San Antonio said, 'There were
fewer lines; however, it still took
three hours to pick up a check."
Dr. Landis explained that although
a combination of things have helped,
the Financial Aid Department has
some thingsfleft'to'dol
Tarleton students can hope to see
continuing imfprB Vements in this area.
As a reminder, the Financial Aid
Department will begin handing out
summer and fall 1995 financial aid
applications on February 1, 1995.
Students are encouraged to come
by room 135 in the Administration
Building.
leaders for
student section of TAHPERD
Special to the J-TAC
Austin, TX —- Several Tarleton
' State University students demon-
strated their leadership abilities as
they took over the reigns of the Texas
' Association of Health, Physical Edu-
cation, Recreation and Dance,
'(TAHPERD), Student Section.
Tarleton junior Jamie Scruggs of
1 Bowie was elected president of the
Student Section and four other
Tarleton students will serve on the
executive committee.
Twenty-four colleges and univer-
sities throughout Texas are included
in the TAHPERD Student Section
membership including Southwest
Conference schools such as Baylor,
; Texas A&M and Texas Tech, and
LoneStarConferencerepresentatives
such as Southwest Texas State Uni-
versity, Stephen F. Austin, and Texas
A&M at Kingsville.
One of her first duties as president
was to appoint an administrative staff
and Scruggs chose Jay Bundick of
Blanket and Jeremy Wallace of
Weatherford as vice chairpersons and
Dawna Davis of Graham as secre-
tary. Misty Riebock, a Tarleton se-
nior from Stephenville, who was
elected as president of the uni versity' s
chapter of Tau Phi Epsilon, will also
serve on the executive board. All of
the students are Exercise and Sports
Studies majors.
"It was sort of an unusual election
because you weren't allowed to cam-
paign, " said Scruggs, one of
Tarleton's campus leaders and the
1994 selection as Miss TSU. "We
just walked around and introduced
ourselves and tried to get to know as
. many people as possible without ever
really mentioning 'vote for me'."
Among herresponsibilities as state
president will be participation in the
annual leadership conferences, set-
ting the agenda for business meetings
and programs for the Student Section
at the annual convention, presiding at
all Student Section meetings, serving
as a member of the Representative
Assembly and writing a column for
each issue of the TAHPERD Jour-
nal.
At Bowie High School, Jamie was
active in track and basketball as well
as cheeleading and FFA. During her
years at Tarleton, she has served on
the Student Government, the Ath-
letic Council, been an officer in Tau
Phi Epsilon and was appointed to the
Texas A&M University System
Chancellor's Student Advisory
Board.
"I think it's important for a student to
become involved in campus activi-
ties, especially those within their
major field," said Scruggs. "By be-
coming more acquainted with their
department, a student can expand the
network of contacts for career oppor-
tunities and better understand his or
her major field of study."
Elections were held during the
71st annual convention for
TAHPERD held the first weekend of
December. Twelve faculty members
from Tarleton's Department of Health
and Physical Education accompanied
the students with several of the pro-
fessors making presentations during
the conference seminars.
