Students petition tries to save teacher's job
By Roderick Richardson
Editor-in-Chief
More than250 students have signed
petitions in support of a teacher who
has learned her contract will not be
renewed next year.
The petition drive, started last week
by several students in Marcia Schober' s
criminal justice classes, asks that she
be rehired.

tice major and one o£ the ^tudfeiljs^

Schober, who joined the faculty in
the fall of 1994, received a bachelor's
degree in criminal justice from Mid-
western State University in 1984. She
earned a law degree from Drake Uni-
versity and worked as a state prosecu-
tor for five years in Des Moines, Iowa
before coming to Tarleton.
Students learned Schober would be
leavingTarleton when they talked with
her about plans for next year's classes.
Schober said she received notifica-
tion of her dismissal earlier this month.

sexual harassment. An evaluation of
her academic performance, Schrober
said, stated she was discourteous and
was not a team member. The notifica-
tion further reported that she missed
the new faculty breakfast.
Schober is touched by the students'
c'onerhs about her future. "The students
are just expressing their feelings," said
Schober. "Evidently word got out that
Dr. [Herbert] Jarrett and Dr. [Richard]
Shigley had chosen not to renew my
contract and the students felt that I'm
an asset to the program...I'm just over-
whelmed by the support."

tions' discharge of Ms. Marcia Schober.
We ask that you reconsider your ad-
ministrative decision as to her employ-
ment status. We, as students, feel that
she is a highly qualified professional
educator and a tremendous asset to the
criminal justice department of this uni-
versity. Her removal-would be detri-
mental to not only the criminal justice
department, but the uni versity as well."
"I love the students here. I love
teaching them. I don't want to uproot
The'jJetition states; "We, the under-
signed students of Tarleton State Uni-
versity, petition against the administra-
people."
Schober said, "I intend to have due
process and to defend myself vigor-
ously against these accusations."
