Engineering Building.
Additionally, portions of the Dick
Smith Library roof will be
replaced with an anticipated start
date of Feb. 24.

pleted by May 31. Construction

Humanities Building and within
the Memorial Stadium parking lot.
Tarleton
reaches
S. America
By Cason White
Managing Editor
The vision for Tarleton State University
is to "Create a culture of excellence for our
students." When that was written, no one
would have believed the quaint, little
campus would grew into what it has
today. There are "satellite campuses" in
such places as Granbury, Ft. Worth,
Weatherford and the gem of them all,
Tarleton - Central Texas in Killeen.
Tarleton is serving thousands of students
in roughly a 10-county radius, but it
appears that the boundary has been
tremendously expanded.
Our Computer Information Systems
department has recently begun the first
online CIS masters degree program in the
state. Basic online CIS and other business
courses are available from a terminal any-
where around the globe. In fact, many
classes, from English to American gov-
ernment can be taken online. Darwin
Campbell, residing on the island of
Curacao off the coast of Venezuela, has
taken advantage of these online courses.
Campbell, a defense contractor and an
employee of DynCorp, was born in Iowa
and later moved to Killeen, where he
learned about Tarleton. Campbell is pur-
suing a bachelor of science degree in busi-
ness administration.
It was brought to the attention of Dr.
Brad Chilton, head of the CIS depart-
ment, that there was a student from
somewhere in the Caribbean taking
online CIS courses last semester. "I think
this is a very exciting thing," said Chilton,
"both for our school and our depart-
ment."
Gayla Wright, faculty-training coordi-
nator for the center for instructional tech-
nology and distance learning, taught one
of the courses that Campbell took last
semester. .
"I wouldn't have noticed that he .was
from Curacao had I not required the stu-
dents fill out a questionnaire," said
Wright. Campbell filled out the question-
naire and revealed how much he has in
common with students on the
Stephenville campus. He enjoys working
on cars in his spare time. He said that he
is extremely busy as a quality control
supervisor and finds it difficult some-
times to keep up with his studies.
Last semester Campbell enrolled in CIS
courses but this spring he is taking an
introductory marketing course and prin-
ciples of financial management. It seems
that the beautiful beaches, casinos and
bars of Curacao act as a distraction for
Campbell. "I took these online courses to
keep me out of these places after work
and on my off days," said Campbell.
It appears our message of excellence is
spreading by the semester. If this quaint,
little university can reach to the clear
waters of the Caribbean, where else can it
reach?
Tarleton celebrates
Library Lover's Day
By Melissa Schneider
Staff Writer
In need of something to do on
Valentine's Day?
How about reading some poetry to
that special someone, checking out a
video or sending him/her an e-mail.
Stop by and show
support for the Dick
Smith Library on
Valentine's Day for
the annual Library
Lovers Day. Hosted
by the library public
relations committee,
Library Lovers Day is
to help celebrate the
library. Buttons and
candy kisses will be
given out during reg-
ular library hours in
the inside lobby of the
library.
Library Lovers Day is a national event,
celebrating schools, public and private
libraries of all types. The event recog-
nizes library value and attempts to
assure that the nation's libraries contin-
ue to serve.
Normally held as a month-long cele-
bration, "the library public relations
committee decided to bring the event to
Tarleton to help celebrate Valentine's
Day with something special," said divi-
sion head Trudy Carlson. "We have
good participation from the students
and faculty members," said access serv-
ices librarian Jennifer Barrera.
Just in time for Library Lovers Day,
the Dick Smith Library has recently
acquired a new vendor in efforts to
update the book col-
lection. Over the past
year another improve-
ment has been added
to the library. The
"databases have sky-
rocketed," Barrera
said, causing an
increase in library use.
The number of class
sessions held in the
library is up a well.
"Computer use has
also increased,"
Barrera said, "due to the recent circulat-
ing of lap tops."
The library offices have come alive
with Valentine's colors and decorations
"to bring a friendlier atmosphere to
those who visit the library," Barrera said.
"Students and staff members really seem
to appreciate the extra gestures of the
decorations, buttons and candy."
Tarleton's Gordon chair
speaks at conference
Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, the Gordon
Chair in Texas Industrial History
at Tarleton State University, spoke
at the Oklahoma Historical Society
in Oklahoma City, Okla., on
Saturday.
Baker was part of a panel of
scholars speaking on the WPA
Slave Narratives following an
advanced screening of an exclu-
sive HBO documentary entitled
"Memories: Readings from the
Slave Narratives." The event took
place in the Wiley Post
Auditorium.
The Tarleton historian was one
of only five scholars to participate
in a panel discussion on remem-
brances of African-American slav-
ery following the screening.
