THE SUPREME COURT VA0AN0Y.
An editorial taken from tho New
York Herald gives the history ond
present status of a constitutional com
plication dependent on the oouiposi
tion of tho Supremo Court of the
United States. It is an exceedingly
interesting editorial, and shows that
even a graver responsibility than
usual, in the appointment of a su
preme justice, now rosts upon Presi
dent Cleveland. Fortquately, the lc
cality from which the judge according
to precedent is to bo chosen, is a good
general guarantee that a state's rights
man will bo selected. But the present
is8uo makes it still moro imperative
upon Cleveland to search out the best
and most couservative judicial talent
in tho south, that the determination
of this vital state question may be
placed in the ablest keeping. A poli
tician and a statesman are not now
needed; the appointee to till Justice
Woods placo must bo a judge of rcc
ognized standing and broad gunged
viows. Such a man is Texas' Chief
Justice A. H. Willie. He should
have the vacant seat upon the bench
of tho world's greatest court.
