his blood red band $arled the
dynamite into the bosom of the
shrieking, struggling mob. It was
not that they wished to injure the
mob, bat to get beyond that and be
able to strike tile higher stra tas of
Soaiety. The demons did notheei
tato even for one brief instant of time
to immolate their comrades who were
yelling and soreecbing before them in
all the phrensy of anticipated Blood,
arson, debauch and chaos.
They die. The law says so. The
courts say so. The officers who are
to execute, say so. But above all,
pablio opinion says so, and that is
omnipotent. They jiiad fondly hoped
that their trial, condemnation and de-
tention was all a farce, a meaningless
play, witich wts only to increase the
personal impórtanos of the actors in
the bloody scene by attracting to them
aniatergfitdeepenod and intensified by
what the ignorant public was to be-
lieve was a real danger, bat which to
the inner circles was bat the merest
of shams. The mistake has been a
fatal one to the actors. Their mimio
prison tarns oat to have been a real
one, their mimjg count, judges and
jurors tarn oaf' to have been real,
and now the sentence is known to be
no farce. Interest has deepened
among the actors and their friends
until it has become very painful, al
most insupportably so. They must
die and what funny after piece can
now move the audience to laughter,
or sond the mery maskers themselves
to bed with a smile on their faces or
a jest upon their lips. Conservatism,
law, order, public safety and public
decency steps in and all deolare with-
out a dissenting voice that the dread
penalty mnst be paid, to the end that
public safety may be guarded by de
stroying all who would put it in
jeopardy.
The judges of the Illinois courts
and the authorities of the govern-
ment do not interfere to set aside tho
verdiot of publio opinion—that of the
coarte might easily be handled, but
when it oomes to public opinion, why
you see that is another matter quite,
and reqnires other moans to reach it
and to seoure a reversal. The law
less and the mawkish all over the na-
tion are moving to set aside the ver -
dict of the courts, but publio opinion
steps in and says nay, and it is no
idle and meaningless declaration. It
means nay. It means that society
will hereafter protect itself, even from
Chicago anarchists. Law,- not an-
archy, rules in this land and must
ever so rule. And publio opinion
says, if you don't mean to obey the
law and live under it, as other people
do, ye shall not destroy. Ye Bhall
get out and away from tho country
and cease troubling. Else if the law
is< contravened thero are dungeons
