Sports Docket
by Al Orenberg
January heralded the begining
of the new intramural sports
season at South Texas, with
basketball and soccer being the
first to break into action this
spring.
Under way are preparations for
golf, softball, and tennis pro-
grams. All students, faculty, and
friends are invited to play and
cheer for the teams.
STCL joined the Houston Soc-
cer Association and participated
in competitions with the associa-
tion members. Piloted by the
Massar brothers, Hans and Ton,
fifteen intrepid South Texas foot-
men take the field each Sunday at
Irvington Park or Moody Park, <
with 16 weeks of competition
scheduled.
Denver Harbor Park is the
center court for the first intra-
mural basketball league. Thir-
teen teams are competing in two
divisions on Sundays between
noon and 6 p.m. The five-week
season will conclude with play-
offs at the Downtown YMCA.
Larry Hatley, Chuck Traina, and
Joe Bailey spearhead the round-
ball pack.
For the fairway fan, a five-week
golf program begins the week of
Feb. 18. Match play will be
conducted at Memorial Park golf
course. Anyone interested in
participating should contact the
Greens committee, Al Orenberg
at 629-4107 or Bob Schwartz at
978-7935, for information and
matches.
Spring training is now under
way for STCL's first intramural
softball league. All students and
faculty are encouraged to play.
Larry Hatley or Gus Haddad may
be contacted for further informa-
tion.
During April the Intramural
Committee of the SB A will host
the first annual tennis tourna-
ment. Tom Fountain and Jan
Sadick, who may be reached at
860-0093, will welcome any as-
sistance in planning this affair.
An intramural golf program,
with all rounds to be played at
Memorial Park Golf Course, will
highlight spring sports. The
program will consist of two parts.
Part one will be qualifying
rounds of 18 holes to be played by
entrants at their convenience and
attested by at least one other
golfer in the program. Scorecards
and $1 must be submitted to the
Greens committee no later than
5:30 p.m. Monday, March 3. The
greens committee will maintain a
table in the bell lobby for this
purpose and for general informa-
tion and pairings each Monday
from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
After the posting of qualifying
scores, two flights will be estab-
lished and pairings for Match
Play will be made by the greens
committee (part two). Matches
will be played at the golfers'
leisure, and scorecards along with
$1 must be posted no later than
the following Monday.
Only winners must submit
scorecards. Losers, at their
discretion, may enter a consola-
tion bracket. All scorecards must
be attested.
Approximately one match a
week will be played. In the event
a golfer loses two matches, he will
nevertheless be included in plans
for a party to be celebrated at a
future date, possibly in conjunc-
tion with the basketball party.
The program will conclude before
April 12.
USGA rules apply, along with
winter rules.
All grievances must be filed in
writing with the greens commit-
tee no later than one week after
the disputed round is played.
Trophies will be awarded in each
flight.
The greens committee includes
Al Orenberg, Bob Schwartz, Dick
Seltzer, Chuck Traina, Mark
Linsky, Willy Collins, Jeff Marsh,
Mark Johnson, and Gus Haddad.

tournament, the school was se-
lected as the site for this year's
competition.
STCL International Moot Court
team members Tom Hamblin,
Diantha Garrett, Bob Oake, Larry
Schwartz and Gordon Vaughan
are presently gearing up for the
competition to try to assure the
school's appearance at the na-
tional meet to be held in April in
Washington, D.C.
The rounds in Washington, in
which the South Texas team
participated last year, are held
simultaneously on both domestic
(U.S.) and international levels
Teams from any of 60 countries
will square off for a final
competition which pits domestic
against international teams.
Sponsors of the competition on a
nation-wide level are the Associa-
tion of Student International Law
Societies and the American Soci-
ety of International Law.
STCL's team members, chosen
in October, recently put the final
touches on the brief for the
competition, which deals this year
with space law. More specifical-
ly, the problem centers on a joint
sky venture dealing with who
incurs liability when a situation
occurs similar to the fall of
"Skylab."
Students wishing to aid Student
Advocacy Board members with
the competitions may contact
Mimi Malick or Sue Ann Ray,
National Mock Trial Regionals
co-directors; and Steve Tipton,
International Moot Court Region-
al Championship director.
