Phi Delta Phi Sets Initiation Ceremony
Distinguished Members of the Bench and Bar Welcome Initiates
Phi Delta Phi, Interna-
tional Legal Fraternity
was established in 1869
and is now the nation's
oldest professional frater-
nity as well as the only in-
ternational legal frater-
nity. Phi Delta Phi, mean-
ing "Friends of Justice
and Truth," is dedicated
to promoting high stan-
dards of professionalism,
legal ethics, and acedemic
scholarship.
The Wood Inn of
South Texas College of
Law takes its name from
the Honorable John H.
Wood, Jr., who was assas-
sinated in San Antonio,
Texas in 1979. Judge
Wood was the first fed-
eral judge to be
assasinated during his ser-
vice on the bench. As a
bit of trivia, Charles
Harrelson, the father of
actor Woody Harrelson
stands convicted for
Judge Wood's murder.
The Wood Inn was
established on April 19,
1982, and maintains the
high traditions estab-
lished by Phi Delta Phi.
On September 18,
1997, our initiates will
participate in a ritual that
is virtually identical to
that taken by five Ameri-
can Presidents, five cur-
rent Supreme Court Jus-
tices, and other distin-
guished members of the
Bar and Judiciary in the
United States, Canada,
and Mexico.
Phi Delta Phi ini-
tiates will join such dis-
tinguished members as
Roosevelt, Cardozo,
Hughes, Sanford, Fuller,
and Holmes.
Along with our
student initiates, the Hon-
orable Sam Nuchia, of the
First Court of Appeals,
will be initiated as an hon-
orary member of Phi
Delta Phi, Wood Inn.
Judge Nuchia is a
model for Phi Delta Phi's
ideals and goals. He
serves as an example for
our members as he has al-
ways maintained respect
for the law, our courts,
and the ethical conduct
demanded of our mem-
bers.
Judge Nuchia
graduated with honors
from South Texas Col-
lege of Law in 1983, and
he has continued to
achieve the highest levels
of professionalism in ev-
ery endeavor. Wood Inn
is honored to admit this
years initiates and Judge
Nuchia into our order.
The Wood Inn was re-
cently represented at the
Phi Delta Phi Interna-
tional Convention by
Jo Anne Musick, Magister,
and Earl D. Musick,
Vice-Magi ster.
Earl and JoAnne
were recognized during
the convention as the first
father-daughter active
students members in the
fraternity s one hundred
twenty-eight year history.
After four hard
days of planning and
work, the convention del-
egates elected South
Texas alumni Tim M.
Wheat (Wood Inn 88) as
the International Vice
President.
Also elected to the
International Council is
another Texas member,
Kelley L. Heide, former
Province 22 President.
Both of these dis-
tinguished attorneys will
be attending the Wood
Inn Initiation Ceremony
on September 18,1997 as
well as many other distin-
guished attorneys and
judges.
During the Interna-
tional Convention the
Honorable Bruce S.
Mencher, Marshall Inn
60, related a story from
his Senate confirmation
hearings as he was ap-
pointed to the Superior
Court of the District of
Columbia. A Senator,
who was a member of Phi
Delta Phi, said, "I didn t
think you would have a
problem [with the confir-
mation], you are Phi
Delta Phi."
This quote sums
up what Phi Delta Phi
stands for. Wood Inn, a
honors inn was estab-
lished to promote a higher
standard of professional
ethics and culture in
South Texas College of
Law and in the profession
at large.
We hope to make
this our finest year. ■

South Texas Hosts Danish Law Students
Five Danish law
students began classes
this fall at South Texas
College of Law as part of
a cooperative exchange
agreement with the Uni-
versity of Aarhus School
óf Law in the Aarhus,
Denmark.
Approximately
sixty students competed
for the five student ex-
change positions. This is
the first program of this
type in which the Univer-
sity of Aarhus has partici-
pated with a U.S. law
school.
South Texas
plans to apply for recog-
nition from the American
Bar Association of a full
semester abroad program
in order to send Houston
students to Denmark as
exchange students.
The Danish ex-
change students were al-
lowed to request their pre-
ferred courses and the
most common selections
for the fall semester in-
clude mediation, Consti-
tutional Law and Interna-
tional Law. The students
are interested in a com-
parative study of law and
South Texas students are,
in turn, exposed to other
legal systems and ideals.
In Denmark, a law
degree takes five years to
complete. Each of the
participants in the ex-
change program are in
their fourth or fifth year.
The students,
Berit Dysseholm, 25;
Gitte Guftavsen, 28;
Annette Norup Koch, 24;
Bettina Normann
Petersen, 33; and Torben
Thygesen, 25 can be
reached through Assistant
Dean Wanda Morrow at
713/646-1825. We wish
them the best!
