Anti-uonoi'olt In Texas lias but olio
meaning anti-democracy. In nbuslnR
anil-monopoly all ilr-mor-rata anil ileum-
cratlo Journal are consistent.
Tun Uiprcaa Jocularly (iikkckIh tliHt
perhapa Oeronlino may take h liunil In
local pollllei. Tho peoplo woulil like to
aee bis neck In a local noose.
Tint reform olub recently ornanlwil
by the young tlemocracy of tills city
seem to exercise the minds o our even-
ing ootemporarles quite seriously. The
club I said to be Hulled.
Chain late congressman Is amusing
himself during the Interval before con-
gress In squaring nway at the Galveston
News. He might as well box with a
rubber bag.
Tiik Ualveston News of jutcrduy ut-
ters some lied rock truths concerning
the Ueronlmo situation In Ban Antnnlo.
A half column of harder horse sense was
never published In that Journal. It Is
well worth reading.
Tiik communication signed "llob&rt"
on the Qeronlmo business does not hit
the I.iniiT. When It was penned tho
writer probably had not received his
yesterday evening's Issue of this paper.
The communication speaks fur Itself.
Tin Mexican Independence day was
very generally celebrated throughout
our ilster republic. The City of Mexico
did herself proud on that occasion in a
manner never before equalledand our lo-
cal column are evidence of the manner In
which the event has taken hold upon the
aleotlons of the Alamo city.
Many of the prohibitionists of Texas
teem to have had tbelr till of Cranllll.
The third party show tlgns of great
feebleness. It was weak very weak
when born. Ik Inherited a feeble oonstl-
tntlon from Its father and was not well
nourished by Its mother.
Tun Bulgarian question Is no more
settled to the satisfaction of the czar
than some political questions are settled
to the satisfaction or Han Antonio poli-
ticians. The real battle Is yet to follow
and It Is safe to say Bantone will finish
her Job first.
Tiik riddle of this campaign Is to
olpber out bow a protective tariff demo-
crat oan vote for a free trade candidate;
also how a democratic Journal that al-
ways advocates protection can support
a free wool democrat for congress In
Western Texas. Oh democracy 1 what
Inconsistencies are done In thy name.
Tiik cholera In Austro-llungary Is
taking a fresh bold and seems to grow
more virulent aa the season draws to a
close. In Italy the mortality shows lit-
tle signs of abatement. The American
scourge wbloh may a kind I'rovldenco
avert la the election of a democratic
house of representatives thl. Tall.
Tiik ancAT powers of Europe appear to
be standing at attention each sovereign
with a chip on hi shoulder and the en-
tire continent In an attitude of expect-
ancy to see who will hit the first lick
that will displace the ohlp that will
bring on a fight that will revolutionize
the very face ol the map of Europe.
KvmKMCia are not wanting of an In-
ereaaed activity In the business circles
of this city this season. There are more
trangers In town than were visible
upon our streets at thl season last year.
With the completion of our gulf branch
of tbo Aransas Pass and the opening of
the northwest extension together with
the building of our smelting works and
the opening of some newSndustrles.asyet
hoped for but not teen the Alamo City
Will be In a healthy business condition.
NOT OVERWHELMINGLY CERTAIN'
Tho Evening Taper yesterday re-
marking upon tho result of the prima-
ries held on Wednesday evening says
that they "demonstrate In advance the
overwhelming sentiment ot the rrpub-
I loans of our city in favor of not making
our comity ofllocrs n teat of parly
Irengtli." 'I lila language the I.intir does
not liellevu to be Justified by tliu re-
mits. For some two or three days bn
fore the holding of the primaries and
lor as many hours alter the I.ioiit was
of the opinion that the sentiment of the
republicans In the city was largely
opposed to a straight party nomination
That opinion was very materially mod-
I lied by the report of the
primaries published In yesterday
morning's Express and that Inter
impression has been cocilrmed by
Hibsequont enquiry among the n-
liubllciins of tlio city. The question of
ii straight ticket Is by no means decided
and from present appearance there nrc as
many republican voters In this olty who
favor a straight nomination na there are
opposed to It. Three thlnga may be put
down aa certain. First the democrats
ol this county will make n straight party
nomination; second tho nomination of a
fualon'ticket will be repudiated by hun-
dreds of republican voters; third as a
conecquoncv a straight republican
ticket will be put In the Held and to
some extent voted for In case
lliu convention does not make
Mralglit republican nominations. A
to tliu success of ft mixed ticket
It docs not enter Into the question
one way or the other. The parly as an
organization has an existence and It Is
only na such organization that It lives
moles and has n being. Outside nf Its
nets as an organization It has no liinnl-
leatcd I'llatencu mill tho sueoeM or de-
feat of Individual member of the party
seeking oHIie through other channels
than by direct Humiliation of the party
noting n an organization la a matter
with which the republican party as a
parly ha no concern. The question of
majorities or no majorities Is utterly
foreign to Ili6 whole matter at Issue.
The question Is shall the republican
party of Ilexar county us a party take
liny Intercut lu the politics of the county
or shall it practically disband as n coun-
ty parly? The republican party was not
organized In the Interests of those who
ilealre olllce but for the accomplishment
uf certain political purposes. These pur-
poses are set forth In what art) culled
platforms nnd upon that declaration of
principles tho candidates of the parly go
before tliu people tho party standing
pledged to the people ut largo for tho
i;ood faith of tho candidates It puts forth.
If the parly put forth no candidates
iiomlnuti'H no tlrkct It certainly has no
i undulates ltcpubllcan Individuals
who am not nominated by the parly
lime no claim upon tho party when
othern Iso nominated licpubllcar voters
tiro thus left free to act their own will
mid pleasure as to whom they will sup-
port and party organization Is subor-
dinated for at least the time being. If a
knot of republicans thus left outside of
jmrty organization and minus a party
ticket dccido to make nominations
lur olllce who can gainsay their
right to do so? Tbo strength
or weakness of republicanism Is not tho
htrength or wcukneii of any particular
member of the party nny particular
candidate for odlce but thu strength or
weakness of the republican organiza-
tion. If Individuals of the paitydeom
themselves stronger than thu party and
prefer a candidacy upon their own mer-
its to a candidacy upon the merits of
thu party It Is certainly their privilege
to do so; but In doing so they should re-
member that their action can have but
uno result to weaken the party as a po-
litical power. Having tbl result It
would bo a very strange logic which
would demand the support of the party
for a policy that if generally pursued
would destroy its very existence
Whether Ilexar county republicans shall
decide to go out of business as n party
(for no one will deny that the only busi-
ness for which a party is organized Is to
nominate and elect Its candidates and
declare upon what platform they aball
stand) or resume business already dis-
continued too long remains for this con-
vention to decide. The decision was net
overwhelmingly rendered at the prima-
ries a division of the house 1 called for
on the question and tlio roll of dele-
gate will be called next Monday to de-
termine It.
Tiik prohibition candidates are on the
decline. The speech of the candidate of
the "dry party" at the antl-mouopollst
convention at Fort Worth did not evi-
dence nny very particular interest In the
campaign. The party Itself when It
find that It can do no more Injury to the
republicans will go Into a decline. It
was organized to light republicanism as
Us history show.
Bomk generous public spirited Indi-
viduals who own quite extensive tracts
of land ulong the lino of the Aransas
I'ass railway within the city limits
have offered to donate the number of
acres upon which to plant the smelting
works. Other parties have come forward
with proposals to sell some ellglb'.o
property ut greatly reduced rates. Be-
tween these It Is not at all Improbable
that so soon a the agent of tho smelting
works arrives here a choice will be
made. In the mean time It would be
well for those who bavo property that
they think desirable for this purpose to
forward their propositions to the oom-
mlttee In order that no time may bo lost
In making the selection. Asa vigorous
young suburb Is destined to spring up
and bo thickly settled In the Immediate
neighborhood of these works their dell-
nite location la a matter of no little pe-
cuniary Interest to aomo of our land
holders.
Tiik best men are leaving the cousu
Jar and diplomatic service of this coure
try In Mexico. Minister Jackson'
place will be bard to supply and the late
l'ledras Negra consul I. E. Linn was
recognized a the most efficient consul
along the border. No one rejoices at
his departure but the thieves and cut-
throats along the line.
l9"Busorbihe.for the rVniav LiQ ut.
Tiik limit handed and brutal outrage
perpetuated upon!"Dlok Hayes"lhe for-
mer railway postal clerk by bis old per-
secutors postofllce Inspector J. E. Ilol-
llngsworth and his assistant H. II. Iloyal
should not escape the attention of the
department at Washington. The un-
just I liable arrest of Young Hayes upon
a charge that could not lie substantiated
ol which all Texas has knowledge was
followed by the complaint of Mr. Hayes
to the grand Jury. The Inspector and
his assistant In revenge for this action
of Mr. Hayes In seeking legal redress
assaulted him and would bavo done him
serious bodily barm had they not been
prevented. It Is .high time that the de-
tectives and Inspectors and secret ser-
Tloe men of the government too many
ol whom habitually misrepresent and
blacken those whom they cannot render
ubservent to their will should be made
to understand that they are not above
taw and beyond the Inquisition of courts.
A charge against these men for assault
with Intent to do great bodily harm pos
sibly for an assault with Intent to kill
should speedily follow and all who are
Interested In maintaining tbo liberties or
tho citizen Inviolate will rejoice In see-
ing ltdono.
Tiik smelting works boom has struck
Corpus Chrlstl aa well aa Laredo and
now the "Caller" calls loudly for a fur-
nace of Arc.
TiiEne auk already two vigorous re
publican ward olubs organized in this
city. One In the fourth ward and one In
tho third ward. The fourth ward club
numbers about one hundred and twen
ty-live members and will try and make
itself felt In the coming elections The
organization of good ward clubs In tho
the other wards should speedily follow.
There Is work to be done and needed
work not alone In electing good men to
olllce but In educating young men to
understand the essential dlllerencea that
exist between thu republican and demo-
cratic parties to tho Intent that they
ake their political choice Intelligently
nnd cast tbelr votes for such measures
us are demanded In the Interests of a
true people's government.
