A WORD IN SEASON
The last week before the election It
upon ut and the voters of the county
who desire good gorernment not only
now but In tho future mutt look at mai
lers Intelligently and dcolde at men to
whom are entrusted the grave responsi-
bilities of freemen. Thli election will
very largely determine whether thli
county shall bo given over to the hands
of one unscrupulous host and nomina-
tion! for office be tnado In the dark-
lantern way which bat characterized alt
Irregular political proceeding here and
elsewhere; or whether admonished by
the open bargain and tale of office con-
sequent upon the defeat of regular parly
nomination! In the republican conven-
tion 10 itlnglng a rebuke shall bo ad-
ministered to personal politics ai op-
posed to party politic! that thli
most corrupt and ollenslve per-
tonallam shall be forever after
denied a recognition. In thli question
and In Its settlement tho people of this
county are all Interested. To lay that
good government cannot be seoured and
good faithful efficient olllceri selected
to serve the people by the regular party
conventions li to inako a very grave ac-
cusation against all the precedents of
the past and challenge all tho approved
methods of the last half century. Ileforo
thli Is done we Insist that the gravity
of the situation at least demands a care-
ful scrutiny of the causes which have
led to Ibis departure In llezar county
and the probability or Improbability of
any good result arising Irora the
change.
One known evil will remit bai al-
ready resulted the disorganization ol
the republican party and Its practical
extinction ai a political factor In the
present campaign. This may be
a very good democratic reason
for supporting this demoralizing
movement because their forces re-
main Intact to a very large de-
gree that party having very wisely
made Its own nominations; but It Is a
very poor reason wby republicans
should support this disorganization. To
argue the destruction of the republican
party ai the ground upon which to de-
mand a republican following Is the
most absurd proceeding human perver-
sity could devise. Yet.lt li thli very ab-
lurdlty that It being consummated by
those who having denied the republi-
can party Ita legitimate nominations
now demand that as a reward for hav-
ing accomplished thli destruction of the
party tbey shall be rewarded with as
many ofllces as will satisfy them and
the rest given to their democratlo
allies.
The Lmin will not follow this mad
attempt to enthrone the personallsm of
politics above the honorable and con-
aeratlve usages ot party proceeding In
which the voice of the people It beard
and the will of the people consulted.
Was the cry of "ring" twice as loudly
uttered as It has been and were
there twice as much of truth In
the allegations as wo know there Is
falsehood we would prefer the "King"
of party to the offensive corrupting and
demoralizing Influences of such "host-
Ism11 as bas been developed during this
campaign The oorrupt use of money
has never proocoded to so outrageous
and shameful a length as during this
campaign. The greed of men has been
made to serve Its purposes In making
political combinations as never before
and the great head center of this bar-
gain and sale should be branded with
the Infamy of tho Iniquity he bas
worked. Tho I.uiiit votes for such re-
publicans as are not Involved In this
bargain for oftlce. Outside of that It
very generally supports the candidates
of the Industrial League because the
League li more In sympathy with the
republican state platform and ticket
than either of the other parties.
Tiik Austin Statesman can read more
history backward than any other journal
that ever adventured Into the field of
public opinion. It says In all apparent
seriousness that the "best Interests of
the laboring classes are Identified wltb
the democratic party" and seems to ex-
pect the laboring man to believe It. The
force of self-deception could no farther
go. The cloven foot of thli prophet of
reform li disclosed In one sentence "let
the wage-earners stand aloof from poll-
tics as a body." That fixes It. Divide
them up and let democracy gobble them
In at the polls. Thli li tho one service
for which the democracy as represented
by the Austin Statesman would employ
the;worklngman to vote a solid demo-
cratlo ticket and perpetuate a state leg-
islature that has bound them In the
meshes of the most Intolerable clan leg-
islation that any State baa placed upon
its statute books. The legislative tickets
of thli county and that of Travis county
will be tupported by the worklngmen
only In to far aa the candidate! lor legis-
lative honors are sound on the question
or dill legislation. One law for the rich
one law for the poor. Equal rights for
all exclusive privileges for none. These
are the watch words of this campaign
and the battle it being fought for thli
coming legltlature under this banner of
equal rights and no exclusive privileges.

Tiik southern expositions held by
colored people for colored people have
been of no little advantage to them In
stimulating race pride In Industrial and
agricultural progress. These expositions
bave been held In Arkansas Loulilana

District of Columbia. Every year has
