14~~:Alexandre Hogue, shown here on the set of the 1931 production of Spread Eagle, designed the set and exhibited fif-
teen paintings in the lounge during the run of the show.the artist for this production is perhaps the most
elaborate and spectacular ever attempted not
only by amateurs but by professionals in this sec-
tion of the country:.' Several artists did assist
him in painting the sets, including Jerry
Bv waters and Perry Nichols. Bvwaters also
designed the program cover. The lounge exhibit
consisted of humorous sketches by Ed Reed and
lighting fixtures by Lynn Ford. The settings cre-
ated by Hogue for the production were so
accomplished that after the play closed, theybecame part of a theatre arts exhibit at the
Highland Park Art Galleries.
When the Maple Avenue theatre ,vas built
for the Dallas Little Theatre in 1927, it included
a second floor lounge in which coffee and
refreshments were served by hostesses. In 1931,
after Charles Meredith Nwas hired, local artists
began presenting exhibitions in the space." The
first tentative plan was to show canvases by one
or t\wo artists in conjunction with the opening of
