THURSDAY AUGUST 7 1902.
It would not be surprising if a
new ambassador to Mexico should
be appointed before long.
Convict Tracy in Agninaldo's
place would probably not have
been such easy prey for General
Fnnston.
General Smith takes his medi-
cine like a soldier and refuses to
utter a word of complaint against
the pnnishment which the president
has m-ti'd out to him for his
intemperate speech.
The first sack of rice ot this
season's crop was sold in Houston
Saturday for $50. It was classed as
No. 1 Honduras fancy .the sack
weighing 182 pounds. The pro-
ceeds were douated to a charitable
enterprise.
The press reports are still bur-
mimI with the details of the dis-
graceful Yohe-Strong affair in
which the divorced actress wife of
ji lilted Englishman and a disgrac
ed American army captain son of
a prominent American famil' are
concerned- Why such disgusting
slush should be served as news is
diflicnlt to understand.
Peace and concord have not
brooded over the American especial
embassy to the coronation. The
members of the 'embassy say that
their English hosts treated them
most courteously but that Ambas
sador Choate on giving a dinner to
the king and queen presented only
Mr. Whitelaw Reid and his wife
to their majesties. Hence much
bad feeling and no access of
strength to the Choate presidential
booinlet. Mexican Herald.
DETECT STORM 100
MILES AWAY
Washington D. G.- Willis L.
Moore chief of the Weather
Bureau is about to instal in the
Government observatory in Dnlnth
an apparatus which it is said will
detect an electric storm at a dis-
tance of 100 miles and foretell its
appearance in any given locality.
The device is the invention of
the Rev. F. L. Odenbach a Cath
olic priest of Cleveland O. Bishop
McGoldrick became interested in
it and urged ChiVf Moore to ex-
periment with one in the Duluth
observatory.
Mr. Moore speaking of the in-
vention today said : "I consider
the invention a great help in my
department aud it should prove of
much value to the Weuther Bureau
in its work." Successful experi-
ments have been made by Govern-
ment officials at Cleveland and
Duluth.
STRUCK SALT WATER.

Corpus Christi Tex. Aug. 3.
An artesian well sunk several
miles south of town for irrigation
purposes has developed a salty
flow. This is a great disappoint-
ment. Had the water proven fresh
other wells would have been sunk

A NEW way of acquiring a title
is suggested iu Loudon Truth by a
gentleman whose unme is De
Smythe aud who proposes to
christen his newly born son Sir
Edward in order that the son may
be styled Sir Edward de Smythe.
Truth says there can be no objec-
tion to the operation and eveu
saj'S that it had previously offered
a similar suggestion to those wish-
ing to found titled families.
"There is no reason" Truth con-
tinues "why Mr. De Smythe should
not christen his son Baron or Lord
Smythe or why Tomkins should
not bestow on his son at the bap-
tismal font the name of Viteount
or Eirl Tomkins or even Earl de
Tomkins if he prefers it." Here is
a brilliant idea for the "Walled-
off" Astors or other ex-Americans
in Eugland who are afflicted with
a longing for a title and cannot at-
tain it for love or money.
CHURCH WINDOW FALLS.

Senator Piatt of New York has
celebrated 1 sixty-ninth birthday
on which occasion he received a
host of congratulations from
friends and admirers all over the
country. On being asked for some
idvice by a young man about to
to enter political life lie said:
"Never give an' one the right to
say that you have broken your
word to him. Be careful about
making a promise but when you
have once passed your word stick
to it though it may he to your own
detriment." Mr. Piatt has had in

by his party from Lincoln to Roose-

DEAFNESS CANNOT BE CURED
by local applications as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear
There is only one way to cure deafness
aud that is by constitutional remedies
Deafness is caused by an inflamed con
dition of the mucous lining of the Eus
tachian Tube. When this tube is in
flamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing and when it is en
tirely closed Deafness is the result and
unless the inflammation can be taken
out and this tube restored to its normal
condition hearing will be destroyed
forever. Nine cases out of ten are caused
by Catarrh which is nothing but an
inflamed condition of the mucuos sur-
faces. We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of Deafuess caused by
catarrh that cannot be curetl by Hall's
