FRIDAY APRIL 12 1907.
A GOOD MOVE.
The example set by the city of
-Corpus Christi in endeavoring .to
liave Mr. Campbell the discoverer
of. the system of dry-farming
-which nromises to revolutionize
farming methods throughout the
Southwest to come and lecture on
the siibiect to the farmers of
jtfueces County should be follow-
ed . nromntlv bv the citizens of
Brownsville and vicinity.
If Mr. Campbell visits Corpus
Christi it would doubtless be an
easy matter to have him come to
iBrownsville to deliver his lecture
Tiere. The Caller is urging the
business men of that city to con
-tribute to the fund which must be
raised to secure Mr. Campbell's
.presence there and The Herald
feels that the business men of
-Brownsville should feel it equally
incumbent upon them to contribute
- towards such an expense in order
to secure the services of thjs able
man for the benefit of the farming
interests of this section.
As everyone knows the welfare
of the business interests of a com-
munity depends upon and is very
closely interwoven with the wel-
fare of the agricultural interests of
the surrounding country. When
crops are plentiful the merchants
and all lines of business thrive
and when crops- fail they suffer
correspondingly. Therefore any
move or discovery which may help
the farmer should interest the local
business man or woman. That
the new system of dry-farming has
already proven a great success in
the semi-arid sections of Colorado
Nebraska Kansas and other stater
is vouched for" by prominent journ-
als. An article copied- elsewhere
in Titfc Herait from the Galves-
ton News substantiates the claim.
Believing that the farming inter-
ests in this- immediate section
-might be vastly benefitted by the
adoption of improved methods by j
which the moisture that is .some
times vouch-safed to this country
in too limited-iquantity misht be
made the most of The Herald
would urge both--farmers and busi-
ness people both town and coun-
' try to pa attention to this subject
and see if 'it wouldnot be a wise
Step to follow Corpus Christi's ex-
- . ample. The testimony of F. F.
Collins of theSarr.Anton.io vicinity
who conducts .one of. the most sue
i cessful irrigated farms in Texas in
favor of the Campbell system should
have much weight with those who
.are interested in the subject.
The fight' in republican leaders'
'circles waxes warmer If the big
menkeep on talking they may yet
tell enough fcT hang themselves.
Senator For'alier lias openly thrown
down the gauntlet '..to President
.Roosevelt and'it is not tobed'oubt-
-ed'that-the latter will take up the
age of battle. .The democrats
meanwhile are enjpyTng the spec-
tacle and' if they only .'had a lead-
r with sufficient strength to unite
chem and attract 'the many repub-
lican voters who aresu're to be dis-
gruntled by tiie 'quarrels of their
own leaders might . profit by. these
events and' gain a victory next.
3-ean. If it come to ji choice of re-
aublicans. pwever as "Senator ;
Foraker is doubtless already assur
ed the democrats outside of Ben
Tillman would stand overwhelm-;
ingly for Roosevelt for while they
may differ from his policies in many
instances and criticise his impetu-
ous temper and the mistakes he
sometimes makes yet they -admire
kis honesty and courage.
The Judge Was Ruled Out.
"Court was late in openin' up
on Tuesday mornin'" says the
Billville Banner. The fact is the
Judge stopped on the road intend-
in to whip two lawyers who had
called him names whilst he was
assettin' on the bench. The only
trouble about this was that though
his intentions were good enough
he wasn't able to carry them out.
The lawyers whipped him!" At

How
Famous Composition Came to
Be Vritten.
The story of how one of Paderew-
ski's most popular compositions
came to bo written was told recently
in London by the famous compos
ers wife.
It was in these early days when
the master pianist was a professor
at the Warsaw conservatoire and
the scene was the home of the
Polish poet Svrietzochowski who
had just expressed the opinion that
no living composer could compare
in beauty and simplicity with Mo
zart. At the moment Ignace Pa
derewski merely shrugged his
shoulders. ' But the following even
ing be appeared asking permission
to play for the poet a little Mo
zartian thing which perhaps he did
not know. Then he played his own
now famous minuet.
"All!" exclaimed Ssvietzochow-
aki triumphantly as the last note.

that could not have been written in
