BROWNSVILLE TEXAS FRIDAY NOVEMBER 15 1907
PROGRESS OF
HILL CANAL
Will Double Its Present Pumping
Capacity.
Pump Now in Operation Ha Capacity of
Fifteen Thousand Gallons per Min-
use Land Cleared and Culti-
' valion in Progress.
While one pumping: plant has
already been installed at the pump-
ing; plant of the big Ion Hill canal
which has a capacity of 15000
gallons per minute the company
is preparing to put in another of
double that capacity the machine-
ry being already received. The first
pump has been in operation about
two months and a flow of 15000
gallons per minute is beiug pump-
ed from the Rio Grande at the
plaut. which is about six miles be
low Santa Maria into the canal
and racing along the canal towards
Harlingen. The canal is already
completed for a distance of about
twelve miles and is said to be one
of the best" constructed in the en-
tire Brownsrille country. It is fif-
ty feet wide being made narrower
than some others purposely upon
the theory that a sufficient flow of
water may be obtained in a canal
of this width with considerably
less evaporation than in those of
greater width.
A large area of laud is already
cleared and much more is being
cleared along the canal and plant
ing is already in progress wherever
the land is ready. This canal which
will carry the Rio Grande's life-
giving moisture to the new town
of Harlingen and vicinity bids fair
to be one of the most important
irrigating canals in this entire sec-
tion. A

A Real Hero.

"So?" rejoined the man from
Ohio. "How did you do it?"
"I've drunk enough whisky to
kill that many" replied the Col-

GOOD NEWS FOR
BROWNSVILLE
Commission Atakes This a Com
mon Point.
Will Result in Great Reduction of Freight
Rates to Brownsville and Will Build
Up the Wholesale Business
Here.
A private telegram was received
here this afternoon from Lawyer
A. I. Hudson who went to Austin
recently to present the petition of
Brownsville business men to the
State Railway Commission asking
that Brownsville be made a com-
mon freight point in which he an-
nnunces that the commiss;on has
granted the petition.
This is great news for Browns
ville as it will give this place the
same freight rate as that charged
on freight to Corpus Christi.
It will result is a very apprecia
ble reduction in freight rates to
Brownsville and should enable our
merchants to compete with those
of other places in prices. As
matters are now it costs over three
times as much to have freight de-
livered at Brownsville as it costs
from the: same poiuts to Corpus
Christi which discrimination is
naturally very hard upon our mer-
chants generally. This will build
up the wholesale trade in Browns
ville and make this" a distributing
point for a large area in this sec-
tion. RAIDING
LOTTERY GANG
Officers of Company In Chicago
Arrested.
Expected to Make Two Thousand Other
Arrests Throughout the Country.
Express Companies May Be
Involved.
Chicago Nov. 13 -The govern-
ment officers early this morning
raided the offices of the "Old Re-
liable Guaranty.& Trust Co." and
secured" evidence1 of what is believ-
ed to be one of the most gigantic
lottery concerns in the United
States.
The district attorney is now en-
deavoring to ascertain to. what ex-
tent the express companies of the
country are involved in the lot-
tery." Thousands of tickets and checks
which had been returned by
agents were taken during the raid
today. '
. D. H. Jones alias Kiesman was
arrested at his hotel early this
morning but in a statement made
to the government officers he stat-
. . . i.
ed that he was merely the mana-
ger for "men higher up."
It is alleged that the agents in
five other large cities of the coun-
try were arrested simultaneously
and it is expected that fully 2000
other arrests will b made through
out the country during the day.
It is the belief of the govern
ment officials that the express com-
panies transacted the firm's busi-
ness with the full knowledge that
it was alottery concern.
