NEW BOARD OF
EQUALIZATION NAMED.
!
Two First Appointed Declined to Serve.
City Officials Sworn In.
Benj. Kowalski and Augustin
Celaya were chosen as members of
the board of equalization at a meet-
ing of the city council held Wed-
nesday night. They act with S.
K. Hallam who was chosen last
monthin revising the renditions
of all the property of the city for
taxation.
As will be remembered by Her-
ald readers the city council ap-
pointed a board of equalization
about six weeks ago. S. K. Hal-
lam J. T. Canales and E. H.

the work. The two last named
however declined to serve and so
the council was obliged to appoint
others in their place.
The first meeting of the new
board will probably be held on
Monday and it will meet several
times a week thereafter until the
entire property list of the city has
been revised.
Both Mr. Kowalski and Mr- Cel-
aya when asked by a reporter of
The Herald today if they had
consented to serve on the board
said that they had. It is expected
that the work of revising the ren-
ditions will occupy at least a month.
At the same meeting of the coun-
cil all the officials of the city elec
ted in the late election wih the
exception of Alderman Jose Cel-
aya who was unavoidably ab.sent
took the oath of office for their new
terms.

LAUNCH DREDGE
ON GUADALUPE
To Be Used to Make that Stream
Navigable.
Reminds Old Timers of Early Days
when Fleet of Freights Steamboats
Plied on That River Between
Victoria and Coast Towns.
To The Herald.
Victoria Texas April 16. The
big steam dredge boat ' 'Guadalupe"
which is being built by the govern
ment to be used in deepening the
Guadalupe river will be launched
on May '6 and the occasion will be
appropriately celebrated by Vic-
torians. The Victoria fire depart-
ment will hold a reception and
other festivities will form part of
the ceremonies jn connection with
the launching of the big boat which
is expected to make this river once
more a navigable stream.
This will be the first big steam-
boat to glide into the waters of the
Guadalupe in nearly half a century.
Some of the old timers here still
remember the fleet of steamboats
that used to ply up and down this
stream between Victoria and va-
rious points on the coast as far as
Houston on Buffalo Bayou. Several
of these boats were owned by Cap-
tain Jesse O. Wheeler who was
one of the pioneers in the develop
ment of this "section.

( Directors' Meeting.
In a telegram to the secretary
of the Lower Rio Grande
Valley Commercial club receiv-
ed in this city last night Hon.
1 John Closner the president is-
sued a call for a meeting of the
directots of the club to be held at
the club rooms on the evening of
April 27th.
The fact that a large proportion
of the directorate will be in this
city on the occasion of the visit of
Hon. John A. Fox was thought
by President Closner to present a
favorable opportunity for a meet-
ing. The meeting will be called at
seveiyo'clock and all the busi-
ness will be transacted before the
address of Mr. Fox at eight o.clock.
