In Justice Court. The court of
Justice of the Peace Gavito was given
over entirely to civil matters this
morning. There has been no crim-
inal docket in this court since the 3rd
of the month.
Plenty of Ducks. A great many
sportsmen spent the day yesterday at
Point Isabel or dther points where
there are fresh water lakes duck-
hunting. All report ducks in the
greatest plenty and nearly all of j
the hunters returned with full game
bags.
Slight Accident. The local tele-
phone company suffered a slight ac-
cident last Saturday afternoon which
for about the space of thirty minutes
greatly hindered the services. The
accident was caused by the switch
board going out. However the trou-
ble was only temporary as the dam-
age was quickly repaired and the ser-
vice continued as usual.
Gipsies Here- Three families of
gipsies from Midlothian Texas ar-
rived in the city last Saturday after
noon and pitched their tents upon the
vacant lot just west of the new ex-
press office. Among this number is
Madame Stewart the oldest gipsy
in the United States and is 74 years
of age. As usual this will be the op-
portunity for all to have their for-
tune's told as telling fortunes is Mad-
ame Stewart's "long suit."

Screening Xew Market. Today the
work of screening that part of the
new market building now occupied by
Bernsten & Oberle proprietors of
the American Meat Market was
completed. It was the intention of
this enterprising firm to have had this

but they were unable to do so on ac-
count of not getting the frame work

For Rent.
Killed Seven Deer. A party of
four hunters consisting of Ranger
Captain T. M. Ross and A. R .Baker
ranger- E. McDougal of Browns-
ville and G. T. Knight of Harlingen
spent four days last week on a deer
hunt on the ranch of Domingo Rotge
eight miles east of Harlingen. They
had fairly good luck and killed seven
deer one of which Ranger Baker
brought to rBownsville and distribut-
ed among his friends. Mr. Baker
says the deer are remarkably fat this
year and that not one of those killed
by the party could be considered oth-
er than very fine.
New Snitch Board. The Browns-
ville Telephone Company is now busi-
ly engaged installing a new switch
board which when completed will
give it sufficient room for one hun-
dred more 'phones. This board is
about ready for use and the manage-
ment is only awaiting the arrival of
a cross connecting frame before in-
stalling it. AVhen the new board is
put in operation two operators will be
employed insteadof one as is now the
case. As soon as the boxes are re-
ceived from 2 a to 50 new 'hones will
be put in within the next fifty days
in various parts of the city.
A'isits Old Home. Mr. John Mc-
Clintock formerly of Houston who
took charge of the Miller hotel in
Brownsville five or six months ago
has spent the week in the city among
his old friends and business acquain-
tances. Mr. McClintock is delighted
with the Brownsville country and
states that its development Is gradual
and constant. Talk of putting a steel
bridge across the Rio Grande at
Brownsville has been revived and
Mr. McClintock states the prospects
are thai the structure will be built
at an early date. The bridge will
mean much for Brownsville and the
country surrounding it. Houston
Chronicle.
Matamoros Improvements. Sub-
stantial improvements are now well
under way on the street railway sys-
tem from Santa Cruz to Matamoros.
The old car sheds have been torn
down and new and more substantial
I ones are now under course of con
struction in the region of the custom
house west of the tracks. Four sum-
mer or open cars have recently been
added to the rolling stock by the
management. These cars were for-
