King's Daughters are preparing for

Eloisa Cavazos in this city. A pleas-

Bids for the building of a city
slaughter house to be built on the
site of what Is known as the Grave
Yard Resaca will be received by the
city council up to and until Monday
November 30th at 2 p. m. Plans and
specifications can be seen at the office
of City Secretary Frank Champion.
Dance Postponed. The dance that
was to have taken place at the Ma-
jestic Hotel tonight has been post-
poned on account of the serious ill-
ness of one of the hotel's guests and
who could not be moved. It will be
given at a later date however an-
nouncement of which will bo made
in due time
Tlianksglving Reunion. On next
Thursday night there will be a grand
Thanksgiving reunion in the court
room of the Federal building and ap-
propriate services will be held.
Among those who will deliver ad-
dresses are Dr. S. K. Hallam Dr. Bur-
ress. Dr. Bell Dr. Ehrhardt and oth-
ers. Everybody invited to attend.
New Depot For San Juan. S. A.
Robertson chief engineer of the San
Antonio & Rio Grande ailroad stat-
ed yesterday to a Herald representa-
tive that a contract for the depot at
San Juan had been let to C. E. Jones
of Houston and that the work of con-
struction would be begun in the near
future. Mr. Robertson also stated
that ties for the new road are now ar-
riving daily at about the rate of
eight or ten cars per day and that
they are also expecting the steel to
arrive from St Louis at any time
He Got the Ducks. Col. S. W.
Fordyce returned last night - from
Point Isabel where he went several
days ugo to shoot ducks. His first
day out he had but little luck but
yesterday morning he bagged nine-
teen fine red-heads in a short space
of time although he found the
ducks as a general thing pretty wild
and flying high. Col. . Fordyce left
for Mercedes this morning.
Trip In an Auto. W. P. Lowry and
E. Owen this city and Wm. Abbott
a Kansas capitalist left this morning
in an auto on a trip through the
State of Tamaulipas their destination
being a point on the coast just north
of Tampico. Their machine was taken
across the river yesterday and they
left Matamoros this morning in
charge of a Mexican guide. They are
merely on a tour of inspection and
expect to be back in Brownsville the
latter part of the week.
To Extend Line. B. G. Stegman
president and general manager of the
Brownsville Telephone Company Is
back from a visit to Corpus Christi
and San Antonio where he has been
in the interest of the telephone line
he proposes to build betwen Browns-
ville and Corpus Christi. He will
leave for Dallas in a short time to
complete arrangements for connect-
ing with the Southwestern's lines at
Corpus Christi and soon after he re-
turns to Brownsville he whl at once
begin the work of building the new
line which will follow the railroad
and for which he has already secured
To Entertain the Bryans.
At a meeting of the entertainment
! committee of the Commercial held
last night for the purpose of consider-
1 ing the early visit of the Hon. Wm. J.
Bryan and wife to the Valley and
. providing for the reception and en-
' tertainment of these distinguished
! guests while here the following com-
! mittee of ladies and members of the
Club were appointed a special com-
mittee to provide and have charge of
ail general arrangements for the oc-
casion. The committee appointed
consists of Mesdames Allen Loew
Porter Conway and Shorenberg and
Messrs. F. J. Combe Noah Allen E.
F. Rowson and R. N. Magill. It is
understood that the plans of this
committee will Include a small in-
formal dinner to Col. and Mrs. Bryan
after their arrival on the evening
train tendered by the reception com-
mittee of the Lower Rio Grande Val-
ley Commercial Club after which an
Informal reception will be tendered
Col. and Mrs. Bryan at the opera
house to which the public will be invited.
