Prentiss Newman the man who is
to construct the Brownsville airship
and make the first flight in it this
morning spoke enthusiastically about
the project. He feels confident that
with the machine which he proposes
to construct in this city he can easi-
ly beat the world s record for the
length of a single flight in the air.
The record made by the Wright .craft
is two hours and ten minutes.
Mr. Newman said today that his
aeroplane would be built along lines
Mexico or Cuba or delivered by
carrier to any part of Brownsville
fexas or Matamoros Mexico.

PLANT CANE NOW.
All who are interested in the sug-
.ar industry in the Lower Rio Grande
Valley should be interested in an ar-
ticle elsewhere in The Herald today
calling attention to some facts that
are of great importance to such per-
sons. These facts briefly stated are
us follows:
Persons wishing to start perma-
nent -cane fields here may save a
whole year's time by planting at
once.
It is not too late to plant now.
Cane may be planted with good re-
sults here any time between now and
March 1 to 10.
Cane raised in this vicinity was
not injured by the late low temper-
ature either for grinding or for
planting. Louisiana sugar experts
who have just made a careful inves-
tigation of the crops here give assur-
ance of this fact.
Seed cane may be obtained on the
sugar plantations near Brownsville.
Planters on these plantations are
themselves busily planting an in-
creased acreage of this same cane
which fully proves their confidence
in the foregoing statements.
That sugar is destined to be the
great staple of the valley The Her-
ald has often asserted. Not only
does sugar-cane give much better
results here than anywhere else
in the United States but it can be de-
pended upon at a conservative esti-
mate to produce a profit of at least
$100 per acre. This consideration
is sufficient to induce any who can
do so to plant a cane field even
though it takes a year to get results.
Sugar-cane will pay handsome profits
here and it is only a question of
time when this industry will be one
of the most important in the entire
valley. The sooner a start is made
the earlier the results may be expect-
ed. Therefore plant cane now.
cnine except tnat ne would nave a
plane that would automatically con-
trol the stability of the machine
which is something no other ma-
chine heretofore built has had. This
machine he says will measure 30
feet over all and will be constructed
of anchor steel and canvass and be
equipped with a 65 power gasoline
motor and will weigh210 pounds. It
is to .have a capacity 'for two passen-
gers and there promises to be a con-
test "for the honor of being the second
passenger on the first flight. The
machine will -'have two planes meas-
uring 8x10 feet and placed about 4
feet apart. It will be equipped with
two propellers. The steering mech-
anism will be controlled from the
rear while the mechanism which will
make the machine rise or move
downward will be controlled from
the front.
The center of gravity will be placed
lower than in other areoplanes which
Mr. Newman states will also have a
tendency to give it automatic stabil-
ity. The two seats for passengers
will be placed well forward in the
machine.
As stated Mr. Newman made a trial
flight in one of hip machines some
time ago but owing to the breaking
of the guy rope the machine after
rising to height of about 70 feet and
being up in the air about 30 seconds
planes. Mr. Newman states that he
did not expect to make a successful
flight with this machine that it was
only a trial to find out just where
the weak points of his machine were.
All who saw him make this trial
flight stated that it was one of the
most successful trial nights ever at-
tempted. The aeroplane used in San
Antonio was towed by an automobile
to give it the necessary momentum.
The one that Mr. Newman will con-
struct here however will be built
upon wheels and will furnish its own
motive power. Mr. Newman expects
to begin within the next week or two
on the construction of his machine
and expects to h ave it ready for the
trial flight within the next sixty days.

secured exclusive rights to all patents
covering the inventions of P. E.
Newman of San Antonio and who
came here recently to build one of
his airships. As already reported
one of Mr. Newman's machines was
given a successful test at Fort Sam
Houston San Antonio on January
3rd the length of the flight being cut
short by the breaking of a guy wire.
Mr. Newman's aeroplane exceeded all
expectations in the test given re-
quiring but half the speed estimated
as necessary to accomplish prolonged
flight. A machine will be completed
ready for field test in about eight
weeks and will be thoroughly tried
out at Brownsville. P. A. Newman
the inventor of this aeroplane will
