Barbers Must Close. Complaint
has been made to County Attorney
E. K. Goodrich that the Mexican bar
ber shops on the side street and in
the suburbs of the city do not close on
Sunday but keep open in direct vio
lation of the law while those on
Elizabeth street have been forced to
keep closed on Sunday. Mr. Goodrich
has had all of these shops against
whom complaints have been made
notified that if they fail to observe
the Sunday law they will be prosecuted.
Pay Your Poll Tax Now. There
yet remain only a few days more in
which you can pay your poll tax and
have a vote in the April Iection. So
far the paying of poll taxes has been
very slow. Last year in the city of
Brownsville thre were 1119 poll taxes
paid. This year to date only ninety
have been paid. An election ior al
dermen of the city will be held in
April and it is to the interest of every
citizen to have a vote in this election
So pay your poll tax now or you may
forget it until it is too late. Last
year 2868 paid poll tax receipts paid
in Cameron county but so far there
have been only 159 paid in the entire
county. Raymondville heads the list
outside of Brownsville with 27 re
ceipts for this year.
Savings Bank Tapped. Sometime
between Sunday night and Monday
morning the pressing establishment
of Sellman and Miller on Elizabeth
street was entered and a small sav
ings bank belonging to Albert oelman
robbed. The robbery wasnot discov-
ered until yesterday when Mr. Sel-
man went to place some money in the
bank. At the same time he shook the
bank causing the lid to fly open and
ad. in place of money the astonished
owner found that it contained a
quantity of rusty nails. The bank
had contained about ?23.G0 the thief
having taken all but $2. CO and re
placed the money with the nails to
prevent dfceovery of the robbery. Sus
picion rests upon a negro porter who
formerly worked in an adjoining bar
bershop and who disappeared Mon
day morning. It was found on Mon-
day that all of the fuses in all of the
lights in both the barbershop and
pressing room had been blown out
and it is supposed that this was
done by the thief so that he could
not be detected by anyone suddenly
turning on the lights. A blue serge
coat belonging to Jim Neeper which
happened to be in the shop at the
time was also stolen.
