REGRETTED IT WHEN TOO
. LATE.
On August 7 1871 the city coun-
of Brownsville passed an ordinance
granting to the Rio Grande Railroad
Company the right "to lay their
track or tracks for a railroad within
the inhabited limits of the city on
jny street which may be- convenient
to the said company and which they
may for" such purpose select and
which shall lead towards and includ-
ing Levee street to the river."
On January 2 1872 in response to
'the indignant protests of the prop-
erty owners in the section of the city
near Twelfth street on which the
choice of the railroad company hap-
pened to fall and realizing what a
stupendous blunder the previous city-lTURTLK
council had made the council at-
tempted to revoke the blanket fran-
chise which had been given to the
-company. A. resolution was passed
Mo the following effect:
"That the city council will not per-
mit" the Rio Grande Railroad Co. to
pass through any of the streets of the
Uy without permission Is first had
from the council the city claims the
right to designate the street through
which said road may pass and where
the depot shall be located."
The issue thus raised was fought
bitterly. The railroad claimed that
-the council could not revoke the fran-
hise once granted. It attempted to
lay Its. track on Twelfth street. The
outraged citizens .tore up the track
and the city obtained a perpetual in-
junction in the district court pro-
hibiting the company from layng its
track on the disputed street. The Su-
preme Court however finally sus-
tained the railroad company and the
"injunction was .dissolved. The rail-
rcad company took advantage of its
hard won victory and laid the track
-oa Twelfth street And there the
same track lies today a source of
laily inconvenience to the many hun-
dreds who pass along this most used
'thoroughfare of Brownsville :. mon-
ument to the ill-considered action of
--a. city council which granted the re-
quest of a railroad company without
'consulting the best interests of the
Hy. The council regretted the ac-
tlon when it was too late

It becomes necessary for us to inform you that the practice
which has grown up of giving credit for laundry work has proven
hurtful to .the laundry and its patrons and it is desirable to aoid f
the results attending It. The Increasing number of accounts and th 5
endless worry of keeping record of and collcting same necessitatet
our adopting the cash system. Our accounts being necessarily small
the time required for collecting aggregates to the laundry consider- i
able loss. Further our own current expenses mainly for labor re- t
quires cash for us. To place our business on a-basis that shall be t
fixed and reliable and better for the laundry and our patrons we
have concluded that on and after March 29 1909 all laundry work l
must.be paid for when delivered. ' J
For the convenience of our customers we will issue coupon-'
books sold for cash with the following discounts: ?2.00 book forf
