Most Rev. Arthur J. Drossaerts, Rev.
Dr. George Mulvaney, C.S.V., and
Charles K. Walsh to Take Part in
Ceremonies.
The Most Rev. Arthur J. Dros-
saerts, D.D., LL.D., archbishop of
San Antonio, pontificating, a solemn
high mass will open the commence-
ment day exercises at St. Edward’s
university on Sunday, June 3, the
Rev. Dr. Joseph Burke, C.S.C., presi-
dent of St. Edward’s, has announced.
At this mass, the baccalaureate
sermon will be delivered by the Rev.
Dr. George Mulvaney, C.S.V., pro-
fessor of philosophy at Incarnate
Word college, San Antonio. Follow-
ing the mass, there will be the bless-
ing of the American flag which was
presented to the University on Wash-
ington ’s birthday.
The graduation exercises will be
held at 4 o’clock in the University
auditorium, when bachelor’s degrees
will be awarded to twelve men. The
commencement address will be de-
livered by Charles K. Walsh, attor-
ney at law in Wichita Falls, and
prominent member of the Knights of
Columbus council of that city. The
exercise will be preceded by the aca-
demic procession from the Adminis-
tration building to the auditorium.
The annual awarding of prizes and
the announcement of prizes will also
occur at these exercises.
In the afternoon, at 1 o’clock, there
will be a meeting of the Association
of Former Students of St. Edward’s,
which will include the annual elec-
tion of officers, William P. Galligan,
secretary of the Association, has an-
nounced.
The Preparatory school commence-
ment exercises will take place on Sat-

Association of Former Students of
St. Edward’s meets, Sunday, June 3,
according to William P. Galligan,
secretary.
The members present last year de-
clared that it was one of the most
enthusiastic meetings in the history
of the organization and a better
meeting is being anticipated when
the graduating class of 1928 make
their debut among the St. Edward’s
ex’s;
Last year the Rev. Dr. Joseph
Burke, president of the University,
and honorary president of the Asso-
ciation, stated that he believed one
of the best ways to build up the or-
ganization was by first getting the
local organizations functioning prop-
erly. In accordance with that idea
he was responsible for the formation
of the San Antonio, Houston, Yoa-
kum, Fort Worth and North Texas
chibs. These clubs were organized
primarily for the purpose of keeping
the students together during the
summer and after they leave St.
Edward’s.
The speakers for the meeting have
not been announced as yet but their
subjects will deal mainly with plans
on the further development of the
local organizations of the Associa-
tion.
Dr. C. L. Kopecky of Yoakum,
president of the Association, is send-
ing an urgent call for every old stu-
dent to be present for the meeting
Sunday, June 3. He is making his
A list of eighteen prizes to be
awarded to University and Prepara-
tory students of St. Edward’s at the
commencement exercises on June 3
and 4, was announced Thursday,
April 5, by William P. Galligan,
registrar of the University.
Four awards will be made for es-
says on phases of philosophy, Ameri-
can history, and tolerance. Prizes
also will be given to outstanding
students who have achieved the high-
est averages in the departments of
engineering and business adminis-
tration, and to the outstanding stu-
dents in philosophy and journalism.
Gold medals will be awarded to each
of the men representing the Univer-
sity in intercollegiate debating. Two
silver loving cups will go to the most
valuable athletes.
The principal awards to be given
in the Preparatory school consist of
a medal for the highest scholastic
average and a gold watch to be given
to the winner of the annual oratori-
cal contest to be held as a part of
the Prep commencement.
Prizes offered University students
for the year 1927-28 are as follows:
A gold medal, founded by the Most
Rev. Peter J. Hurth, C.S.C., D.D.,
LL.D., a former president of St.
Edward’s, will be given for the best
essay on philosophy. This medal is
limited to juniors and seniors. If no
essay be of sufficient merit, there will
be no award.
Forty dollars in gold, founded by
Mrs. S. V. Dooley, of Austin, in mem-
ory of Private Urban Wood, who
died while in France with the Ameri-
can expeditionary forces during the
