WEATHERFORD, Tex., Jan. 8—
UP—Final rites were scheduled
here Friday for a colorful Church
of Christ minister and politician,
B. J. Forbes.

state legislator, died Thursday at
his farm in the Tintop community

node horseback everywhere he
went, disdaining faster and more
modern methods of transportation.
He had preached the gospel in
Parker county for 57 years, riding
his faithful steed, Ollie, for many
years about the countryside until
the horse died two years ago at 26
years of age.

an unexpired term in the .state leg-
islature and was re-elected for two
consecutive terms thereafter. Dur-

He approached one house where
a man opgrated a whisky still and
had quite a quantity of whisky on
hand. The prospective voter saw
the minister coming, riding Ollie,
shouting: “That’s all right, Preach-
er. I’m going to vote for you any-
way.”
Forbes turned around and left,
and local residents say he got the
still operator’s vote.
Prior to the last election, he was
named to serve as a delegate from
Parker county at the state Demo-
cratic convention, but balked when
the county organization voted to
send an uninstructed delegation.
He took the floor and declared he
would not represent the county un-
less he had instructions to vote for
the man the Democratic party nom-
inated.
Forbes was a native of Missouri
and came to Texas a a young man
to study at the Add Ran College,
University, at Fort Springs. He
came to the fintop community as
a teacher and minister in the
Church of Christ in 1896, and was
married in 1898. His wife died in
1931.
Forbes operated a farm near Tin-
top and many years he produced
the county’s first bale of cotton.
Funeral services will be at 3:30
p.m. Friday at the Weatherford
Church of Christ.
