Referral Service Open
Recognizing the import-
ance of senior citizens
getting information on such
matters as income, health
care, housing and trans-
portation. Congress has
passed a law which
requires that all older
people must have "reason-
able access" to informa-
tion and referral services
linking them with oppor-
tunities and services in the
community.
Action has been taken by
the East Texas Council of
Governments as the Area
Agency on Aging to develop
a regionwide information
and referral service for
senior citizens. ETCOG has
contracted with the De-
partment of Public Welfare
to administer the service
that may be beneficial to
any person age 60 years
and over. The information
and referral service will
cover the entire ETCOG
14-county region.
The Department of Pub-
lic Welfare hired six
full-time workers. They are
stationed in Gilmer, Can-
ton. Tyler. Marshall, Jack-
sonville and Henderson.
These workers are assign-
ed to cover specific
counties and will inform
senior citizens on pro-
grams that might Interest
or benefit than. If the
person has a special
problem requiring assist-
ance, then the worker will
refer the person to fee
proper agency and Mp
set up an appointment.
The service is tlM
designed to provide trans-
portation, using volunteers
to transport citizen* to and
from the proper agencies.
The offices are open from
8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday
through Friday.' The
information and refferal
service is made possible
through a grant from the
Governor's Committee
