Acknowledgements
For "Home Games Friday and Saturday Nights," thanks are due to Jo Helen
Matheson, Charlie Herder's only child, who prompted the author to get his long dormant
notes together and begin work on the article. She also provided numerous photographs,
made contact with the former members of the team, and collected their autobiographi-
cal sketches. Without her encouragement and generosity, the article might never have
been written or published.
Jiggs Kana and Al Kasparek were also enormously helpful. Both men most
generously loaned scrapbooks and memorabilia and allowed the author to interview them
several times at length. Mention should be made also of Bill Hartley, Hop Priest, and
Melvin Neuendorff, all of whom played against the Truckers. They provided their own
recollections of the semipro circuit and of specific games and players. Whatever life is
in the article is due to the often colorful remembrances of these five men.
Numerous people are due thanks for their roles in bringing the Ervendberg
Kirchenbuch to print, among them John Bowers and Willie Ann McColloch, who brought
the transcribers together. Most instrumental, however, was Donaly Brice of the Texas
State Archives, who directed us to the original register and who provided other,
indispensible favors.
