Bobbie Kilpatrick has been a full-time professional painter since 1982. She moved to the
Columbus area in the early 1990s and became a member and supporter of the Live Oak Art Center.
Her one-person show at the art center in 1993 was one of the most acclaimed recent exhibits. Her
cover illustration shows an election being conducted in front of the old Colorado County courthouse;
that on page 8, the signing of labor contracts by freedmen.
Randolph B. Campbell is Regents Professor of History at the University of North Texas,
and a recent president of the Texas State Historical Association.His 1989 book, An Empire for
Slavery The Peculiar Institution in Texas, 1821-1865, is widely acclaimed as the best work on the
subject. His work on Reconstruction in Colorado County is part of a larger study of grass-roots
Reconstruction which will soon be published.
It would be difficult indeed to compile a bibliography that aspires to thoroughness without
the help of one's friends. Particular thanks are due to Paul Archuletta of Columbus and Pat Scott
of Salem, Virginia, who located copies of items that I could not find. The continued assistance of
Donaly Brice of the Texas State Archives and Trudy Croes, John Slate, and Ralph Elder of the Center
for American History at the University of Texas has also been invaluable.
