On the Cover
The cover contains a photograph, taken around 1890, of Sophie Bacon, a former slave who
during Reconstruction purchased a block in Alleyton which her family still owns and on which she
and her descendants have since resided. The image was donated to the library by Neddie Phillips.

Barry A. Crouch is a distinguished professor of history at Gallaudet University in
Washington, D. C. His long list of awards and citations includes a fellowship from the National
Endowment for the Humanities. He is also a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association. He
has written many articles about the Freedmen's Bureau and a notable book, The Freedmen's Bureau
and Black Texans. His newest book, Cullen Montgomery Baker: Reconstruction Desperado, was
written in conjunction with Donaly E. Brice. Part 1 of his lengthy article on the Freedmen's Bureau
in Colorado County was published in the May 1995 issue of the Nesbitt Memorial Library Journal.
