On the Cover
Eagle Lake, near which the family of Angus McNeill settled, was for most of the nine-
teenth century a center for fishermen and hunters. This photograph, taken in the early twentieth
century, is of the lake in the last years it was opened to the public. About the time the photograph
was taken, the lake was pumped dry by rice farmers, killing all or nearly all of its fish. After a
lawsuit by one of the lake's owners established that it should perpetually contain water, the lake
was refilled. It was subsequently acquired by one entity and leased to a private club, the Eagle Lake
Rod and Gun Club, for recreational purposes.
